Foundational Principles for Setting Subject Specific Questions

for Written Examination (Open Competition)

Position: Lecturer

1. There will be two papers of 100 full marks each for the written examination. The percentage of the
distribution of marks for both the papers has been fixed as follows:

(a) First Paper: Main Subject Specific Question Paper: Multiple Choice and Subject Specific
Knowledge - 100 Marks

(i) Multiple Choice Questions - 20%

(ii) Subject-specific Knowledge - 40%
(iii) Recent Trends in Main Subject - 20%
(iv) Creative Expression of the Main Subject - 20%
Total - 100%

(b) Second Paper: Knowledge of Curriculum, Subject Specific Problems, Teaching and Research
Methods - 100 Marks

(i) Knowledge of Related Curriculum - 50%

(ii) Teaching Methods and their Application - 15%
(iii) Research Methods and their Application - 15%
(iv) Problem Solving - 10%
(v) Higher Education Policy and T.U. - 10%
Total - 100%

Parameters for Setting Questions

1. Multiple choice questions will represent subject specific areas.

2. The distribution of multiple-choice questions will consist of five percent (5%) reproductive, ten percent
(10%) analytical and five percent (5%) creative questions.

3. (a) One right option has to be chosen out of four alternatives in multiple choice questions.
(‘all of the above’ and ‘none of the above’ as alternatives should not be used in multiple choice items.)

(b) Negative marking will be applicable for the wrong selection of any of the four alternatives in
multiple choice questions. In other words, 0.5 marks will be deducted from the marks acquired for each
wrong answer (For example, if an examinee gives 15 right answers and five wrong answers in a set of
multiple-choice questions carrying 20 marks, s/he will obtain 12.5 marks in total).

4. The main subject-specific, knowledge-related question paper will comprise of 10% factual, 20%
analytical/interpretive and 20% critical/creative questions.

3
5. While allocating 20% marks to recent developments/trends in the areas of the main subject, the
questions should mandatorily address current issues, trends and challenges. While setting questions on
such trends, priority should be given to innovative insights.

6. Emphasis has to be given to the structure, usefulness, application and relevance of the curriculum in the
questions related with curriculum, subject-specific problems, teaching and research methods.

7. In questions related with teaching method/s, eight percent (8%) marks will be allotted to the application
and seven percent (7%) marks to the usefulness of teaching method/s.

8. In research method/s too, eight percent (8%) marks will be allotted to the application and seven percent
(7%) marks to the selection, appropriacy and relevance of research method/s.

9. In research writing, questions will be asked on the effects of fabrication, falsification, plagiarism and
research misconduct in research. In subject-specific problem-solving questions, four percent (4%) marks
will be allotted to the exploration of events, issues, questions/problems and six percent (6%) marks to
suggestions for solving problems.

10. Regarding knowledge on higher education, five percent (5%) marks will be allotted to the knowledge
on/about higher education policy, its usefulness/implications and implementation and five percent (5%)
marks to the knowledge of T.U. structure, performance appraisal and service conditions.

Areas to be Covered by the Questions

1. The knowledge of related subject must include the cognitive, content oriented, pragmatic and applied
contents/components represented by the main subject. Such contents should also represent innovative
thinking, trends and current issues. Similarly, the appropriacy, relevance and pragmatic implications of
the area covered by the subject should also be included.

2. While allocating marks for the questions, the following criteria have to be observed:
(a) Twenty-five percent (25%) marks to questions of reproductive and cognitive level
(b) Fifty percent (50%) marks to questions seeking explanation, analysis, criticism of and discursive
engagement with the subject matter
(c) Twenty-five (25%) percent marks to questions seeking interpretation, originality, creativity,
application of and reflection on the subject matter

3. While setting the question, if the question setter has demanded more than one answer for a question,
marks have to be mandatorily allocated for each expected answer.

4. While setting questions, the question setter must follow the specification chart as it is.
