Lightning Design Calculation:

Room Index Calculation:

Used For the purpose of the purpose of calculating the room size.
Room Surface Reflectance:
To determine the Utilization factor UF from luminaries’ data sheet it is necessary to determine room
average surface reflectance.

The reflection coefficient determine the light reflecting from wall, ceiling and floor, which depends upon
color, type of floor and ceiling.

The general table for reflection coefficient of various materials is:

Utilization Factor (UF):
For lamp it is necessary to determine the initial light output in lumen. For most situations it is determine
by 100 hour of burning when lamp is stabilized.

To determine the no of luminaries required to produce the luminance you need to know about the
proportion of lamp light output that arrive on working plane either by directly or by reflection, this is
describe by utilization factor UF .

Normally provided by lightning manufacturer catalogue, UF have value always less than unity, normal
modern office building UF=0.9

See above table if you have reflection coefficient and room index you can determine the utilization
factor.

Maintenance Factor (MF):

Lamp light output reduces with life, cleanliness of environment and deteriorates with age. The output
also affected by regularity of re-lamping and cleaning regularity.

 Average cleaning after 24 months.

 Re-lamping depends upon the type of lamp and working hours.

This allow us to assign the maintenance factor to the installation, depends upon maintenance staff of
the buildings.

Maintenance factor for well maintained installation:

The Number of Luminaries Required:
E = Required luminance in LUX, Normally chosen after consideration of IEC code
