Ball mill

Aim:
To determine the
(a) Critical speed
(b) Actual speed
(c) Optimum speed
(d) Reduction ratio
(e) Constants for
(i) Rittinger's Law
(ii) Kick's Law
(iii) Bond's Law.
Equipment and Materials required: Ball mill, sieves, weight balance,Coal
Theory:
The ball mill is used for fine grinding of soft materials. Here, the size reduction is
done by the impact of ball which is generally 1" to 5" in diameter. The mill operates
in batch as well as continuous manner. When the mill is rotated the balls are carried to
the top in the mill and they fall down giving an impact on the material. The height to
which the balls are carried depends on the speed of rotation of the mill.

Figure:

Procedure:

1. Take 2 kg of suitable material and do its sieve analysis. Note down the initial meter
reading. Now charge the mill with feed. Operate the mill for 20 minutes. and note
down the final meter reading.Take out the material from the mill and do the sieve
analysis of the product
