Survey Engineering Lab

Job No 1
 Title: To determine the pace length
 Location: Foot Ball Ground
 Surveyor: Student Name
 Observer: Engr. Tafheem
 Date of Survey: 02/09/2019
 Instruments Required:
I. Wooden Peg
II. Peg Hammer
III. Fiber Glass Tape
 Significance/Objective
Through this job, we can take an idea about the pace length of an individual person. By this,
a person can measure approximately the length and width of a given area without any chain
and tape.
 Related Theory
Fiber Glass Tape:
It consists of a ribbon of cloth of fiber class with linear-measurement
markings. It is a common measuring tool. Its design allows for a measure of great length.

 Length of tape = 30m or 100 feet.

 Least count in SI units = 0.002m or 2mm.
 Least count in FPS units = (1/96) feet or (1/8) inch or 1 soother

 Procedure
 Take known distances like 30m, 60m and 90 m on the ground.
 Put wooden pegs or Ranging Rods on both sides of the known length.
 Walk along the length in a straight path and count the number of steps.
 Take out the mean value of steps counted on the same path of particular Length.
 Finally calculate the pace length

 Calculations and Observations

• Field book example

# OF PACES

TRIAL 20M 40M 60M

1 30 58 90

2 30 57 89

3 31 57 90

AVG. 30.33 57.33 89.67

PACE = 20/30.33 = 0.66M/PACE

40/57.33 = 0.70M/PACE

60/89.66 = 0.67M/PACE

AVERAGE PACE = 0.68M/PACE

 Results:
The average pace length measured is 0.6 m

 Comments:
After Completion of this job I am to measure approximately the length and width of a given
area without any chain and tape.
