Field Work 1: Pacing

Objectives:

1. To determine the average length of your own pace (individual pace factor)
2. To become familiar with using a steel tape to measure approximate horizontal distances.
3. To measure distance A and B by Pacing.
4. To convert the unit from meters to yards.

Equipment:

Steel tape, chalk

Instructions:

1. The location for this fieldwork shall be determined by your instructor.

2. Using chalk, mark in the ground at 0m, 30m, 70m, and 80m stations.
3. Ensure that all the markings are in the ground in a straight line.
4. Use your normal walk to pace off each distance (i.e.: 0 to 20, 0 to 40 and 0 to 60) a total of 3 times
each.
5. Record the number of paces for each trial in your field book.
6. Calculate the average number of paces (individual pace factor) for each distance.
7. Calculate the average length of your pace.
8. Write up the lab in your field book, refer to the following example.

 Field book example

9. Identify point in the ground to mark as A and B on the other point.
10. Use a normal walk to pace off that distance a total of 5 times.
11. Record the number of paces for each trial in the field book.
12. Calculate the average number of paces for each trial.
13. Calculate the pace distance of points A and B by multiplying the face factor by the average number
of
paces and convert from meters to yards, miles, inches and feet.
