LAB EXERCISE NO. 1

PACING

PROBLEM : PACING
OBJECTIVES :
A) To determine the individual pace factor
B) To measure distances by pacing.

Laboratory Exercise Outline

1) Instruments & Accessories

Range Pole Steel tape Markers/ Chalk
2) Procedure

a) Determine the Pace Factor

1. Select a straight and level course an on both ends establish markers at
least 90 meters apart. Designate these points as A and B.
2. Walk over the course at a natural pace or gait starting with either heel or
toe over point A and count the number of paces to reach point B.
3. Repeat step 2, walking from B to A and then A to B until the five trials
are completed, and the number of paces record accordingly.
4. Fill up sample format for recording of data gathered.

0.69 m/pace
b) Measuring Distance by Pacing
1. Define the endpoints of another level course whose length is to be
determined by pacing. Label these end points as C and D.
2. For the first trial, walk over from C to D at a normal pace and record the
number of paces. Then walk from D to C and again recording the
number of paces.
3. Repeat step 2 until five trials are completed.
4. Record the number of paces and determine the length.

As we did our fieldwork last week, I already felt exhausted at first because of the
hot weather. During the length measurement, we all worked together to ensure
the most accurate measurement possible. We rotated through the task of marking
the length's endpoints. I was the one who held and utilized the tape measure
during the whole activity. I observed that everyone of us has a different pace while
walking. Some of us have a longer pace, while others have a shorter one. Also, I
noticed that height does not affect one's pace. I, as a tall person, have a slower
pace than my other groupmates, who are quite shorter than me. I also observed
that some of them maintained a consistent number of paces. The said fieldwork
was a success, not only because I learned from it but also because it gave me a
chance to bond with my groupmate, which made us get to know each other.
