I know that through

observing what others
behave could somehow
determine what kind of
person they are. One
person's behavior can
reflect to the environment
they have and this external
factors can affect their own
personality and identity.

I can describe my self
based on my own
personality and on how
I act or behave in a
certain situation or
circumstances. This is
because my actions
shows my reactions in
that situation which
reflects to who or what
I am as a person.

Gilbert Ryle- denied Cartesian
mind/body dualism and believed the self
as the behavior that can be observed

Write here.

Mind/body problem is the difficulties or

challenges in viewing the mind and
body as two radically different aspects
of the self.

Write here In order to avoid the difficulties of viewing the mind as radically different and distinct from the body, some philosophers and
psychologist have decided to focus on observable behavior in defining the self. Their solution is to simply deny or ignore the
existence of internal, nonphysical self and instead focus on the dimension of the self that we can observe.
Write here. Ryle- summarizes the essential elements of the dualistic view of the
self
- body (physical entity), mind (nonphysical entity)

Write here.
According to Ryle, our bodies are physical entities which are
available to everyone, including ourselves, and are completely
public, while our minds are nonphysical entities which are
completely private and is its own private, personal universe. If
the mind is completely private, it wouldn't be reliable since it will
become subjective and also we don't have a direct knowledge of
other's minds and we only have the direct knowledge our our
mind.

Ryle- the central principle of dualistic view of the self are unsound and conflict with
the whole body
- the "ghost in the machine" conflictsdirectly with our everyday experience

Write here The "ghost in the machine" means that the consciousness or mind carried in a physical entity. This concept is unsound
and in conflict with our everyday experience since although other people assume a mind/body dualism as a general
theory, on a practical level we act and speak in a much different fashion. The conflict reveals itself to be conceptually
flawed and confused notion that needs to be revised.
Ryle- We cant ensure that other minds functions the same way as ours.
Write here Category mistake- representing concepts as if they belong in one logical
category when they actually belong in another.

I remember this girl who gave so much care and attention for me. She was always there with me through my ups and
downs. She used to listen to my rants in my life and even give me advice to just enjoy life. In that action of her, I thought
she likes me, and we can be together. But everything went wrong when she told me that I will forever be her friend and
we will never be together. In this situation, Ryle is right that we can not really know what is in the minds of other people
and I think we are wrong in our dualistic view of the mind.
Write here Ryle- The mind is a concept that expresses the entire system of thoughts,
emotions, actions, and so on that make up the human self.
