A diagram of a 1747-AIC Link Coupler is shown below.

The isolated link coupler is used to connect SLC 500 family devices to the DH485

Network.
The link coupler provides 1500 VDC isolation between the communications cable and the

attached SLC 500 controller and peripheral devices

(1747-PIC, 1747-DTAM-E, 1747-PT1).
For further information on the link coupler and establishing a DH485 Network please

reference publication 1747-6.2 (APPENDIX A).

The following diagram shows a pictorial representation of the 1747-C10, 1747-C11, 1747-
C20 cables.
The cable distances are as follows:
 1747-C10 -- 1.829 meters (6 feet)

 1747-C11 -- 0.305 meters (1 foot)

 1747-C20 -- 6.096 meters (20 feet)

The following diagram shows a pictorial representation of the 1747-C13 cable.

The cable distance is:
 1747-C13 -- 0.914 meters (3 feet)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The 1747-C13 Cable has the "DRAIN" (+24VDC) & "BROWN" (EARTH GROUND)

missing.
Therefore the cable is NOT capable of powering up the 1747-AIC Link coupler.

An external power supply is needed.

CABLE SELECTION GUIDE:

The following cable section guide summarizes the various connection options to the 1747-
AIC link coupler:

This is a straight through cable.

These cables have only been tested at the 1ft, 6ft and 20ft length

Longer lengths "WILL NOT" be supported by Allen-Bradley.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

QUESTION #1:
CAN I DRAW THE +24 VOLTS NEEDED FOR THE 1747-AIC FROM THE SLC
PROCESSOR DH-485 PORT?
 No

Drawing the power for the 1747-AIC module through the 1747-C20 cable from a SLC

Processor is not an acceptable method.

We suggest and encourage using a GOOD QUALITY +24 VDC power supply and locating it

in close proximity of the 1747-AIC Link Coupler.

Remember to tie the 1747-AIC ground connection to earth ground.

QUESTION #2:
CAN I MAKE THIS CABLE LONGER THAN 20 FEET?
A-B does not recommend doing this.

Any device further away from the processor than 20 feet should be connected with a pair of

isolated link couplers (1747-AIC's).

You run the risk of erratic processor operations including excessive down-time due to

processor faults if you extend the C20 cable and do not use link couplers.

QUESTION #3:
CAN I USE THE 1747-C20 IN PLACE OF A 1747-C11 CABLE?
The 1747-C20 can be used to connect a SLC Processor to the 1747-AIC as long as the 1747-

AIC is powered by a separate power supply.

The signal lines are easily driven by the drivers, its the voltage drop in the 20 foot cable that's

the concern and main reason for the remote p/s.

The 1747-C11 (12 inch cable) is the proper cable to use.
