Plant your own coffee tree

Subject: Science
Grade: 3rd

1. CCSD core standards:

6.2.1 Investigate and describe how living things grow and change

2. Objectives:

SWBAT: grow their own coffee tree.

3. Introduction:
 Topic: Ethiopian Coffee
 The teacher will ask the students if they ever wondered how coffee is processed,
after the class discussion tell the students that they will be watching a short video
about coffee in Ethiopia.
 After the video the teacher will pass roasted coffee beans to the class for
observation and write about their observations in their science journal.
 the teacher will then inform students about the activity to be completed for our
topic.

4. Materials/Equipment:
Pots
Soil
Coffee bean seeds
Water
Drawing paper
Markers/crayons/pencils
5. Activity:

The teacher will review the activity step by step before and allow students gather around
the science table and talk about the materials that we will be using to begin planting our
coffee seeds. Each student will take a pot, a coffee bean seed, and soil, to start the
planting process. Teacher will allow students enough time to finish planting and watering
their seed. Followed by completing a picture about what they predict their plant will look
like. Students will then share their predictions with the classroom. The teacher will then
instruct students to place their plants near a window and watch their plants grow over
time. Once the students are able to see their plants grow, they will be able to take their
plants home.

6. Closure:
What other things can we make with coffee beans besides coffee?

7. Homework:
Students will go onto their google classroom and answer the discussion question.
“Where does coffee come from?”
