Group time evaluation

11/18/2018

ECE 251

1. Name of School: CSN lab school

Telephone number: (702) 651-4004

Name of teacher: Stephanie

Age/grade level: 3-5/pre-k

2. Beginning and ending time of group time: 10:00 am – 10:10 am

3. Number of adults working with the children during the group time; number of

children in the group: 5 adults, 9 children

4. Children had gone inside and began to wash their hands and the teachers started to get

them all together for group time, the children sat down in a circle and each child their

own lily pad with their names on it and they were supposed to sit on that exact spot.

During the group time it had been a bit difficult for a few of the students to sit down in

the circle one had wandered off and the others stayed. They had first started off with

doing attendance with a song, so the teacher would go around and say each name of the

student, then she got out a box of sticks with stars and each one had their own and there

was one student who was responsible for the bigger wand as she went around sprinkling

positivity to the other students.

5. It was developmentally appropriate because it gave the students a chance to engage in

social activities with other students around them, also teaching them how to be respectful

and positive in the classroom and respect others.

6. Group time was at least five to ten minutes. During the observation I observed that

children at the ages of 3 to 5 they weren’t able to stay sitting down for more than the five

minutes, some had gotten up and tried to leave the group and one even didn’t want to

participate in the group.

7. It had been appropriate since there was room for the students to sit and participate in

group time.

8. Since they had just come from playing outside, she had told them to wash their hands and

to come sit for circle time.

9. I would say about 75 percent of the students were actively involved and others were not

involved during the group time. There was a student who was in a center during that time,

another one wanted to get up and leave but one of the teachers had stopped him from

leaving. Another one kept standing up and talking over the students and teacher.

10. Some of the children participated in group time singing along, one girl had told one of the

students to sit down for group time.

11. I did see one child who had been standing up a lot and moving around a lot he did not

want to stay sitting down but he would come up and hug the teacher in which she would

hug him back during the group time.

12. During the observation, I had seen that the boys were the ones who couldn’t stay still at

group time some were trying to leave group time, and one actually decided that he didn’t
want to participate in group time and went off on his own to a center, which made the

other boys want to go as well.

13. I found that during this observation the girls had participated more than the boys had

been, there was one boy who was quiet and sitting down but the others did not want to

participate, they had just wanted to leave and go off into the centers.

14. There was one moment where one of the students had screamed because another student

had taken their star away from them since it was her turn to hold it, so the teacher had

said that it was that students day to hold the star and that when it’s their turn they could

hold it then, so the student gave it back to the child.

15. The teacher had ended group time, by naming each center they were able to go to and

would ask each student which center they would like to be in and she would excuse that

student to go to that center.

16. The activities that followed group time, they had been singing songs and the days of the

week, they also did a song where they took attendance by saying the name of each child.

They all sent “get well kisses” to a child who had not been in that day, once that was

done, she had excused each student one by one for center time letting each child pick

which center they wanted to go to.

Evaluation:

During the observation I had observed that children had been moving a lot during circle time

others would stand up and try to get to other centers and not pay attention to what the teacher

had been doing with the whole group, I believe all of her activities she had done were DAP

approved but I believe that she should change up her routine making it different for her

students, for example maybe stretching in between. Or standing up while doing group time
since children between those ages 3-5 have a short attention span. Or possibly divide the

class in a smaller group to get that group interaction.

POWERFUL INTERACTION OBSERVATION

50 points

Date: 11/6/18

School: CSN lab school

Teacher: Stephanie

Age of Child: 4

Time: 20

Setting: gender of the child was female, her age 4 years old. Interaction occurred during

center time, in dramatic play center.

Interaction: The child had gone to the dramatic play area and asked the teacher to join her

where then that’s when the child started to dress up and asked the teacher for help when

putting on some of the things, she had chosen from the dramatic play area. She then grabbed

a hat and told the teacher that she would be wearing that, so the teacher told her “You want

me to wear that?” and the child had nodded and said “Yes” so she let the child put the hat on

her head. After a few minutes of playing the child moved onto a different area and decided to

dance and sing along to music that was playing. The teacher then joined along and started

singing and dancing with the child.

PI Characteristics: The teacher had been present with each activity the child wanted to do

and engaged in that activity with her. (page 13-14) She connected with her by showing

interest in what the child wanted to do for example when they had been playing dress up she

was interested in what the girl wanted to do and wanted the teacher to wear (page 27) She
was showing respect for her interests as well, if the child had changed her mind the teacher

would respect her decision and participate with the child without disrespecting her choice.

(page 53)

Improvement: I think asking more questions to the child would have improved the

interaction more with the teacher and student to build a more respectful connection, and also

know that the child knew the teacher showed more interest in the activities that the child

chose to do with the teacher. It would help build more of a positive relationship (page 28-29)
