Day 9 Tuesday November 24th 2015

Assessment of Pupils Progress

1. How did the teacher monitor classroom activities?
-

She organized the time just enough for the students to be able to do their task and
finish it without having to rush, and what I liked was that whenever a student is
done with her/his task they get to go play in the centers and another student would
work on the activity, I feel like thats really useful and it motivates the student that
if she/he finishes they can play in whichever center they please. The teacher
usually walks around the students in the activities center to see if they need any
assistance or if the task is too hard for them she changes it and if they enjoy it she
lets them do it as much as they like.

2. What sort of designated assessment tasks are integrated within classwork?

-

Miss Hessa Ali usually uses matching, coloring, and sticking objects (numbers,
ears, googly eyes, food stickers) onto plates whenever we had TP lessons.

3. How does s/he assess the learning during lesson?

-

She sits in the middle of the activity table and helps the students by providing
them with paper plates and objects, she also helps them with sticking the objects
onto the plates since that requires glue and could get messy when not handled
well.

4. How did s/he give feedback to facilitate learning?

-

She gave positive feedback and encouraged her students by praising them and
telling them that if they worked harder they can get a reward on the rewards chart.

5. Did s/he give homework?

-

No, she usually just lets them do all their activities in class so she can be around to
assist them when needed. I honestly highly recommend her strategy because if she
gives the students homework they could get their parents to teach them at home,
and their parents would probably teach them in a different way which would
confuse the child once he gets to school and the teacher talks about the same topic
but in a different form.

6. Which of these strategies would you use/not use? Why?

-

I would probably use the positive feedback strategy, compliments really motivate
children and by praising them you are boosting their confidence and self esteem,
motivating them to work harder which makes their future greater and brighter. I
however would not use the matching as an assessment task I prefer hands on
activities that require the students to work instead of drawing lines, I prefer it to be
colorful instead of a plain paper, I want to excite my students with fun activities.

7. Was there anything that could have been done differently?

-

I would have added a table in the activity center since the one they have only
holds six students and while six students work the rest play in the centers while
others roam around the six students waiting for their turns. If they added one more
table to sit twelve students, they could finish faster.

8. What surprised you?

-

What surprised me was when all the students participated in the assembly, they
sang and performed to the shape song, recited a Hadith, and Surah, and even the
national anthem. It was really surprising to me because theyre all so young and
yet they memorized all these things and were brave and confident enough to get
up on the stage to perform.

9. What shocked you?

-

What shocked me was how strict some teachers were, for example on the first day
of my TP there was this one boy that kept crying so I asked him what happened
and he said he wanted to go to the bathroom, apparently they dont allow them
any access to the bathroom or classroom during playground time to the point
where the teacher actually yelled at the student to urinate on himself. I honestly
didnt know how to handle this situation but my TP teacher happened to walk by
me and I told her about the situation and if this usually happens and she said that
they usually tell them to not go in unless its urgent but theyre not allowed to yell
at the students so she thankfully talked to the teacher by the door and then took the
crying student to the bathroom.

10. What delighted you?

3

What delighted me was on the last day me and my colleague decided to create a
small farewell party for our students and teacher after asking permission, we got
them huge stuffed hippos and a bag filled with snacks for each student on their
seat and also got roses for the teacher and principle, we also got a cake with the
students picture on it that we took on flag day, the delightful part was how happy
the students, teacher, and principle were when they saw it and they thanked us and
didnt want to let go of the hippos and actually finished the whole cake and they
were so sad to see us leave, one girl even kept hugging my legs asking me to stay.
Here is an image of how we decorated their lunch room.
