Why a thermal fluid system Advantages for shipyards

Thermal fluid systems on ships are used to
supply heat for various kinds of heat con-
sumers like fuel oil tanks, separators and
fuel heaters and to heat all types of cargo
such as bitumen, oil products and chemi-
cals. Also tank washing systems, steam
generators and central heating systems
are typical fields of application.
In thermal fluid systems, the produced
heat is transferred to the ship’s heat
consumers by means of a transfer fluid,
usually a mineral oil. Pumps circulate the
fluid through the closed system, passing
the fuel oil fired heaters and economis-
ers.
The fluid remains in a liquid phase during
the entire process, enabling high tem-
peratures with the lowest possible pres-
sures. The simplicity of our system and the
non-corrosive nature of the oil makes this
a very reliable and low maintenance solu-
tion. Our system is easy to operate and
due to the way we design the system, the
thermal oil has a long lifetime.

Safety and control
systems
The Aalborg Industries’ thermal flu-
id systems can be supplied with an
in-house developed PLC-operated
control panel. Through the 12 inch
touch screen of this control panel,
the operator has a clear overview of
the complete heating system and its
status. The different kinds of field-
bus connections for communica-
tion mean that connecting a second
touch screen and/or connecting the
system to the central alarm system is
very simple.
Based on limited key data, a pro-
posal for a complete thermal fluid
heating system can be worked out

Energy Management System (EMS)
to control and monitor the tem-
perature of the ship’s fuel tanks and
other heat consumers.
The EMS incorporates all heat con-
sumers and compares the available
heat in the system with the actual
requirement of the consumers, en-
suring the most efficient use of the
heat energy, reducing the need of
supplementary firing of the oil-fired
heater and thus reducing emissions
to a minimum.
To ensure the safe and reliable op-
eration of the plant and in order to
offer a user-friendly system for the
operators, Aalborg Industries have
developed our own safety and con-
trol systems.
Heat exchangers
A variety of heat exchangers for a
wide range of applications can be
supplied. The Aalborg Industries
Group’s own brand of shell & tube
heat exchangers is called VESTA™.
