GENERAL NOTES REGARDING THE AJX SCREENING PROCESS

1. If candidates have any major personal issues/events going on in their life then they are advised to
not apply or sign up to screen until they have a stable personal situation (ie. Divorce, wife is due to
have a baby, major renovations on the house etc). This is one, if not the, most difficult screening
processes in the world and requires a large amount of undivided commitment and preparation to pass.
There is a lot of hard work that goes into getting candidates prepared and ready to pass the interview.
We go above and beyond to make sure the candidate is as prepared as possible and we expect the same
level of commitment to the process in return.

2. Candidates who commit to and are scheduled for a screening date and sim prep and subsequently
cancel within 30days then they will incur the full cost of the simulator. Qantas has a strict 30-day
cancellation policy and the cost will be passed on to candidates should they fail to attend without
sufficient notice. In addition to this, AJX look on such withdrawals badly and we have noticed that
candidates have very rarely been given a second chance to screen.

AIR JAPAN FAQ’S

Q1. Who is Par Avion HR?
A1. Par Avion HR is an Australian-based, licensed recruitment agency engaged by Longreach
Aviation Resources Ltd that will manage your application process and coordinate simulator
preparation for your Air Japan interview.

Q2. Who is Crew Resources Worldwide?

A2. Crew Resources Worldwide is a recruitment company owned by ANA who also owns Air Japan.
Par Avion is a partner with Crew Resources.

Q3. Where are the Air Japan screenings held and how long after my application is submitted will I
hear if I will be asked to interview?

A3. Air Japan screenings are held in Tokyo. Once your full application documents have been submitted
by your Recruitment Officer it can take 1-4 weeks to hear whether you have been invited to screen or
not.

Q4. I have been invited to pre-screen in either Las Vegas, Vancouver, Frankfurt, Tokyo or Miami –
What does the pre-screen consist of and who covers travel arrangements for me to get there?
A4. Congratulations! The pre-screen process is fairly simple and is designed to test your basic flying
abilities. During the screening applicants will be asked to do two circuits in a short 30-minute
evaluation in a B767 simulator. Par Avion has written a brief and profile for the pre-screening
simulator, which is based on our prep material for the Tokyo/Sydney interviews. Most of the pitch and
thrust settings are very close to what is in the brief for the B767. Air Japan will arrange and pay for a
commercial ticket from your nominated departure point and return to that same airport only. If you are
successful then you will be invited to attend a full screening in Tokyo.

Q5. I note that Air Japan require evidence that I have held a radio operators licence for more than 2
years. My ATPL indicates this by virtue of when I obtained my initial PPL. Why do I have to provide
this?
A5. Air Japan is aware of this. However, at this time, to be offered a position with Air Japan, you must
comply with their document requirements. You can provide an old CASA (CAA, FAA etc) licence or
an original radio operators licence certificate. Alternatively, you will need to provide a reference to
regulatory text that states you automatically have this based on your licence.

Q6. I have heard that Par Avion provides simulator preparation prior to the Air Japan screening. Who

do I contact to arrange this? Is there a cost for this? Will I receive any reference material to study?

A6. Par Avion offers AJX 767 simulator preparation in Sydney or Tokyo for your interview. The
Sydney sim prep program is conducted at the Qantas Jet base in Sydney. Your contact details will be
given to our sim prep team manager who will be in touch once your screening date has been confirmed.
The cost of the Sydney sim prep program you will be put through is 2900AUD + GST (3190AUD
Total). The cost of the Tokyo sim prep is 3000USD + 2.2% card fee with the cost for an additional
session being 960USd + 2.2% card fee.

Par Avion & Crew Resources subsidise the full cost of the program for First Officer candidates. Direct
Entry Captains are only entitled to a 1000AUD rebate if successful in their screening and sign the
contract. Candidates are required to pay the full cost of sim prep upfront. First Officers - Provided you
attend the sim prep sessions and the interview you will be refunded the full amount, irrespective of a
pass or fail result. Sim prep refunds are processed at the end of the following month after screening.

The sim prep program consists of 3x 2hour sessions in a B767 FBS. Your simulator instructor will
give you all the details directly. You will receive a sim prep and screening information package once
your screening date is confirmed. This package is the property of Par Avion Pty Ltd and may not be
disseminated.

Q7. Do I need to mention every incident that has occurred on my flights on the AJX application form
under Accidents/Incidents?
A7. If you have had an incident but there were no injuries to passengers and crew, no major damage
to the aircraft and you did not receive a citation by your regulatory authority, then there is no need to
mention anything in this section. Just write Nil or none.
If you feel you would like to mention something here, then you will have to provide thorough
documentation on the incident as well as documentation from your regulatory authority.

Q8. I am having trouble obtaining passport photos in the size required by Air Japan. Do you have any
advice?
A8. You will need to go to a specialized photo shop to have them done or you may want to use the
following website http://www.idphoto4you.com/ to make your photos.

Q9. I am struggling to find the appropriate definitions for the following:

• XC Solo?
• Except PIC and Solo?

A9. Your XC Solo is the time you spent flying solo outside the circuit and training area. If you logged
any hours XC prior to obtaining any pilots licence, this would be XC Solo time. Most pilots have 0.
Your Except PIC & Solo (both with your night hours & XC hours) is referring to your Copilot time.
(Copilot + Dual +ICUS)

Q10. I believe Air Japan will want a background check done on me. Do I need to give consent? When
will this occur and what company does the check?
A10. A background check will be done after signing the Air Japan contract but prior to starting course.
The company is called Decision Risks International, based in Melbourne, Australia and they will
contact you with the relevant authority paperwork.

Q11. Do I have to provide a verification of licence letter with my initial application?

A11. Yes. Please submit a verification of licence letter for the ICAO state ATPL you will be applying
with to your Recrutiment Officer prior to your screening.

Q12. What does the Air Japan screening involve?

A12. The screening will involve -

1. Written Test (15mins)
2. Orientation (60 minutes)
3. Oral Interview (40minutes)
4. Break (60mins)
5. Simulator Check (90mins)
6. MMPI Test (90-120mins)
7. AJX Medical Exam

Q13. What do I need to take to my interview and what is the dress code?

A13. Once your application has passed screening, you will receive an email from a Par Avion
recruitment officer with a file attachment explaining what is required to take to the interview and
screening. Most applicants have all of their documents neatly ordered in one folder to give to the Air
Japan HR representative. The dress code for the screening is shirt and tie for men and business attire
for women. Please do not wear t-shirts or polo shirts. It is recommended that you take your logbook
along with you as well just in case they wish to make additional copies.

Q14. What does the Air Japan medical screening involve? What is the dress code?

A14. All medical screenings are done in Tokyo. The medical is part of the interview process. It is
streamlined and straight forward. You will be required to undertake numerous investigations, including
but not limited to, blood tests, ECG, EEG, chest x-ray, urine test and drug screening, thorough eye
testing (with an ophthalmologist) and hearing tests. It is advisable to eat no red meat and drink no
alcohol one week prior to the medical. Do not take any ‘over the counter’ medication for two weeks
prior to the medical. Please note, your BMI must be under 29.0. As well, the medical staff will report
on how you treat them, so be courteous and respectful to everyone. The Japanese Dr will certainly
write down how you acted in the medical. The dress code is smart casual. Dress polo shirts are
acceptable. No jeans, t.shirts or track shoes.

Q15. Who is responsible for the costs of attending the Air Japan screening and medical?

A15. You will be sent a link to request your tickets to your screening location. YOU MUST NOT go
ahead and book your own flight or use ‘staff travel’ benefits to upgrade your ticket. You are required
to pay for your airfares up front however you will be reimbursed for the cost of a return ticket to and
from your domicile after you attend screening. You are responsible for the cost of your accommodation
(no rebates). Air Japan will organise a room for you in Tokyo at a reasonable price. We can give you
the contact details of a clean, inexpensive accommodation in walking distance to the Qantas Jet Base
in Sydney if you are doing your sim prep there.

Q16. My partner and I are not formally married however, we are in a long-term relationship. Will
she/he be entitled to all the benefits offered by ANA and the health, life and travel insurance as my
spouse?

A16. Yes. Both you and your partner will be entitled to Health and travel benefits as per the ANA staff
travel plan. You are entitled to Life Insurance and you are responsible for nominating your beneficiary.

Q17. What are the details of the medical insurance offered by Longreach Aviation whilst I am
employed by Air Japan?
A17. The actual policies in place will depend upon where you choose to live. If you choose to live in
Australia, you will receive the Corporate Hospital Top health cover from BUPA plus Corporate
Advantage extras, and a QBE travel insurance policy that will cover you (and your family) whilst away
from Australia, on or off duty. If you choose to live overseas then we choose a policy that provides the
best coverage for both you and your family. Normally, around 4 weeks prior to you commencing with
Air Japan, you will receive an online form to complete and from that information we assess which
policies are best for your particular circumstances. More detailed information will be forthcoming at
that time. Additionally, you have a Life Insurance policy to the value of $300,000 AUD.

Q18. What documents do I need to take to the Air Japan screening?

A18. Please read carefully the ‘AJX Screening Documents’ document. If you have not received it 3
weeks out from your screening date, then please email your Par Avion recruitment officer handling
your application.

Q19. I am travelling to Sydney for sim prep and I was wondering if there is a recommended
accommodation options close to the Qantas Jet Base?

A19. Yes. Please contact the Sim Prep manager for more details and recommendations

Q20. If I am offered a position with Air Japan, who am I contracted to, Crew Resources or Par Avion?

A20. Your contract will be signed with Crew Resources (Air Japan), therefore any questions you have
about the contract, should go through them. Par Avion handles the application process and is the first
point of contact for everything other than the contract. Par Avion also offers and organises the sim
prep to get you the job, which Crew does not.

Q21. On the day the ground school starts in Tokyo how long does the licence, instrument rating and
medical have to be valid for?

A21. 6 months

Q22. Will I have to get my logbook certified/stamped/signed to validate my hours?

A22. Yes. You can get any person in your company that is a manager OR holds a delegation from
the regulator, which means any checker to sign or stamp your logbook as validation.

Q23. Does Air Japan require a character reference or simply a statement of employment?

A23. Neither, Par Avion does background check after a contract is offered.

Q24. What is the notice term for Air Japan and is there any penalty for not completing the 5-year
contract?

A24. There is no penalty or payout required if you give at least 3 months (90 days) notice.

Q25. Does Air Japan have a training bond?

A25. No

Q26. How long does the training course (including Ground School & Line Training components)
run for?

A26. Ground school section is roughly 4 to 4.5 months and the full training course is about 7 months.

Q27. How long does the training course (including Ground School & Line Training components)
run for?

A27. Roughly 7 months

Q28. Are you able to provide a sample course schedule from the start of ground school to beginning
of line training?

A28. No

Q29. Am I paid by Par Avion or CREW Resources?

A29. CREW Resources is a US-based company and is part owned by AJX, so you will be paid by
them.

Q30. Where do I pay tax?

A30. You are paid a gross salary and you should seek professional advice on your tax liability.

Q31. I am a US citizen. Since I am paid by CREW Resources, which is a US-based company, do

they withhold tax?

A31. Yes, if you are a US citizen. Seek professional advice though for your tax liability.

Q32. I hear that Air Japan recently got B787’s. How long after completion of the B767 training
before I am eligible to transfer to the B787?

A32. The placement/transfer of 767 pilots onto the 787 will be done on an ‘as necessary’ basis. No
timeframe has been given as AJX doesn't know themselves.

Q33. The contract is 5 years, however is there a possibility for an extension?

A33. Yes, AJX wants you until you are 65

Q34. The contract is 5 years, however is there a possibility for an extension?

A34. You are available to fly for the 17 or so days each month. You are based in Narita and you
typically fly trips that involve layovers in Hawaii, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and China.
Other destinations exist in South East Asia. You typically spend 24 hours in a slip port.

Q35. Does Air Japan or Par Avion help in all the administration that goes together with living in the
Tokyo area (tax declarations; finding accommodation; other legal requirements)?

A35. We work with our Partner Company, Crew Resources, which is owned by ANA. They will
administer the contract. You will have full support during your time with Air Japan.

Q36. Is this a commuting contract only? Is there a possibility for me to live in Japan?

A36. No, it’s a commuting contract. However, what you do on your days off is your business, if you
want to remain in Japan, as many crew members do, then that’s your decision.

Q37. I have logged time as a Second Officer (P2X), should I include this in my Co-Pilot (P2) time?

A37. Yes, when calculating your total Co-Pilot (P2) time then include your time as a Second Officer
(P2X). There are however certain considerations when filling out your forms such as Total Jet time.
Some Second Officers will log their P2X time as block not seated. If this is the case then there are a
couple of considerations when calculating your total jet hours. If you have logged your P2X time as
seated then you can count those exact hours towards your total jet time. If you however logged your
P2X time as block time then you will need to divide your P2X jet hours by 2/3 (as there are 3 pilots
in the cockpit, it is assumed that you are ‘seated’ 2/3 of the time). This ‘rule’ is passed down by the
JCAB and AJX has to adhere to this. The minimum Jet Hours requirement is 500. For this reason,
most Second Officers that apply to Air Japan have a minimum of 750 Jet hours.

Q38. I have heard that there is a referral bonus. What is this and how do I get it?

A38. Air Japan offers a referral bonus to their employees for recommending Air Japan to past
colleagues. To receive the bonus, employees must make sure that the candidate they referred
mentions the referrers name on their initial application via the registration portal as well as including
on their AJX application form how they know their referrer. This bonus does not apply to someone
you met in passing or online, rather a pilot you can attest to on a personal level. The bonus for
referring someone who is successful in obtaining a job with Air Japan is 2000USD.

Q39. In regards to “round trip C class confirmed ticket” privileges for flight crew - If my days off
stretch between two months (e.g. Jan 18 through Feb 12) and my next days off start in March - I

would request a C class return ticket for departure from Japan in Jan (returning Feb), I could claim
the $2000 for Feb, and then again be eligible for a return C class ticket in March? Or is it just return
C class ticket each time you commute home?

A39. C class tickets are round trip. You won’t be allowed to switch from C class to cash on a
month-to-month basis. However something like quarterly or semi annual would be
reasonable. Most pilots figure out what they will do so it hasn’t been a problem in the past.

Q40. If I am successful in securing a job with AJX, whose responsibility is it to acquire a visa for
Japan?
A40. Once you have signed the contract, you will be sent a Certificate of Employment from AJX.
You will then need to take this to the nearest consulate or embassy and process your visa. It is your
responsibility to obtain the visa however AJX will provide you with any necessary letters of
introduction or assistance if required. Note – You will be required to surrender your passport for a
few days while it is processed.

Q41. What is the AJX staff travel benefit and who does it extend to?
A41. AJX allows you, your parents, your partner and your children access the full ANA staff travel
program. That includes ZED fares. You are allowed to purchase Business class ID 90 tickets on
ANA group airlines. Note - Staff travel is a benefit not a privilege.

Q42. What is the accommodation situation like whilst I am in Japan?

A42. The accommodation whilst in ground school and simulator training is provided by Air
Japan at the Duplex C in Takanawa and during line training at the crew hotel in Narita. Once
checked out you will be paid a monthly housing allowance of $550USD. The crew hotel is about
$75 USD/night and you should expect to spend 5 to 7 nights in Narita. That can change as you
know how things do in aviation. The average cost the pilots currently pay in Narita for a 2-
bedroom apartment is about $250 to $300/week. Most pilots share in these apartments so the
housing allowance covers a large chunk of the cost. When you are on a trip outside of Narita,
hotels are covered by Air Japan.

Q43. Is there any way to split duty on the roster for a week on week off type schedule?
A43. Yes, you get 10 hard days off (with 8 guaranteed consecutive) + 2 commuting days + 2
vacation days per month = 14 days off in a block. You nominate when they are taken. Like any
airline, vacation days are not guaranteed however it is common for pilots to receive them
regularly.

Q44. Are there any travel retirement benefits with AJX?
A44. There are no retirement benefits after you finish with AJX.
