Unit-III: Robotics (17ME2504A)

CO3: Understand the working principles of various Robot sensory devices.

1. Explain the role of sensors with regard to robotic applications. Present a brief classification of
sensors used. Cite any TWO robotic applications elaborating the role of sensors in it.
2. Explain the working principle of a potentiometer, with relevant sketches. What are its merits
and demerits?
3. Explain the principle and working of an absolute optical encoder, with neat sketch.
4. Explain the design of an incremental encoder. How it is different compared to absolute
optical encoder.
5. Compare various types of position sensors in terms of their performance specifications,
merits, demerits and applications.
6. What is the importance of proximity sensors in robotic applications? Compare various contact
and non-contact type proximity sensors.
7. What is the difference between Touch and Tactile sensors? Explain the principle and working
of Proximity rod type touch sensor.
8. Explain the importance of slip sensors. Compare Forced oscillation and interrupted-type slip
sensors.
9. Determine the resolution obtained with respect to angular displacement measurement using a
10-track absolute optical encoder.
10. With suitable sketch and citing appropriate application, explain the following sensors:
(i) Synchro (ii) Photo-detector tactile sensors (iii) Scanning Laser Sensors
