NOTES

1. The equation 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 1 = 2𝑘(𝑥 − 5), where k is a constant, has two

equal roots. Find the possible values of k.
2. Find the range of values of k for which the equation 2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 3 − 𝑘 = 0
has two real and distinct roots.
3. The equation 𝑥 2 − 𝑥(2𝑥 + 𝑝) + 3 = 0 has equal roots. Find the values of p.
4. Find the values of p for which the equation (2𝑝 + 3)𝑥 2 + (4𝑝 − 12)𝑥 +
16𝑝 + 1 = 0 has coincident roots.
[coincident roots = repeated roots = equal roots]
