Gillette swimmer sets four
state records in two days

Skye Rehard almost had two perfect days in the
pool Friday and Saturday at the Gillette Summer
Spectacular.
The 8-year-old swam in five events over two
days and broke state records in four of them.
She now holds the best times in the 8 and
younger division in the 50-meter backstroke
(43.57 seconds), the 100 freestyle (1:22.92), the
200 freestyle (3:04.89) and the 200 individu-
al medley (3:25. 86). Rehard broke the medley
record Friday.
“She had a good day,” said Phil Rehard, the
Gillette Gators Swim Team coach and Skye’s
father. “Eight-year olds are different. You never
know what they are going to do. They can swim
their best times at a meet like this, whereas older
kids are training hard and are tired.
“Eight-year olds jump in and do what they’re
going to do. It’s kind of a different day for the little
kids.”
The Gillette Summer Spectacular continues at
9 a.m Sunday in the Gillette Aquatic Center.
The three-day event has 159 total athletes from
South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
Building a program
Familiar last names littered the heat sheets at
the Summer Spectacular on Friday and Saturday.
Baldacci, Carsrud and Ochsner were just a few
of the familiar names.
The last names represent swimmers that helped
the Gillette Camels’ high school boys and girls
teams compete and win state titles in the past.
It also represents the future of the Camels pro-
gram.

Collin Baldacci, who now swims at the
University of Nevada-Las Vegas, is one of the
most well known ex-Camels after helping Gillette
earn a boys high school state title in 2012. He
also was named Wyoming swimmer of the year in
2013.
Collin’s younger brother, Conner, also swam at
the meet and had a great season for the Camels
last year as a sophomore. Their sister Taylor, 13,
swims for the Gillette Gators Swim Team.
The Baldaccis are just one example of a Gillette
swimming family getting better through the
Gillette Gators Swim Program.
That familiarity and consistency can be seen as
swimmers move up into the high school ranks.
Sani Carsrud, 13, swam on Friday and Saturday
and is the sister of Emmalee and Katie Carsrud,
both of whom helped the Gillette girls win a state
title last year.
Shaylee Ochsner, 13, is the younger sister of
two former Camel girls swimming standouts.
“This is definitely our feeder program,” Rehard
said. “A lot of the younger kids you see are sib-
lings of kids on the high school teams. We know
most of the kids. The high school coaches know
the younger kids because they are around their
older siblings.”
Rehard, Noah Beaver and Collin Baldacci all
agreed that the summer is more relaxed, but there
isn’t an off-season in the sport of swimming.
“Swimming is one of the sports where you’re
not going to be super competitive if you’re not
training year round,” Collin said. “We’ll take a
few weeks off after each big season, but we’re
always in the water. Training over the summer is a
must for most swimmers.”
Beaver said it was good to get the feel of rac-
ing because he hadn’t done that in three months.
The junior-to-be at CCHS agreed with his former
teammate that swimmers are more worried about
training in the summer as opposed to wins and
losses.
“If you improve, that’s great,” Beaver said. “But Gillette’s Caden Morton enters the pool in the final heat of the boys 12 and younger
right now it’s hard. Today was alright.” 200-meter freestyle race on Saturday.
