for the ROHINGYA
Refugee Response
Translators without Borders (TWB) has launched a new recognition program for our volunteer
community who donate their valuable skills and time to support the Rohingya refugee crisis
response. Since TWB started responding to the crisis in September 2017, we have translated over
1 million words of life-changing information. We are excited to recognize and give back to our
community in order to establish an even longer and more fruitful cooperation.

What is the TWB Community Recognition

Program?
The Community Recognition Program gives the top contributors access to exclusive webinars and
recognition for expenses. It uses a points-based reward system. Every time you contribute to
TWB’s mission as a volunteer you will be credited with a number of points. These points allow you
to reach different levels of recognition. Upon reaching certain thresholds you will gain access to
different levels as per the table below. The points are cumulative and are never cancelled, so you
keep accruing points even if you claim the reimbursement amount.

Upon reaching each level, you will receive the following rewards:
• Certificate - You will receive a certificate celebrating your achievement.
• Monthly Webinar - You will be invited to attend a private monthly webinar hosted by
TWB covering topics such as online training on language technology, translation and
revision best practices, quality assurance, and insights into TWB’s work.
• Recognition for expenses - You will be able to claim reimbursement for your
expenses (please note this amount is intended to contribute to expenses related to the
hardware and connectivity required to volunteer with TWB) according to the chart below.

How do I earn points?

We will verify the points on a monthly basis and send you a notification of your new total as well
as any new status. If you wish to claim the recognition for expenses, you should write to
recognition@translatorswithoutborders.org.
The points are calculated as follows:

Volunteer Referral - invite

a friend to TWB and gain 1 referral 1000 points
1000 points each!*

* To refer a volunteer, please send an e-mail to recognition@translatorswithoutborders.org with the

new volunteer in cc so we can follow-up with our onboarding procedure. You will be credited with
the points when the new volunteer completes their first task successfully.

Please note: The quality of the work we submit is of paramount importance for us. Only work that
meets our minimum quality standards will qualify towards the recognition program.

Will my past contributions to TWB qualify
for the recognition program?
If you have already volunteered with TWB in the past, you will be automatically credited with the
points for any translations completed from 2017 onwards and will acquire the corresponding status,
if applicable. However, we will not be able to issue the recognition for expenses retroactively.
For example, if upon accessing the program you are credited with 40,000 points for previous
contributions, you will automatically acquire the TWB Traveller status. However you won’t be able
to claim expenses until you reach 50,000 points.

How can I gain access to the program?

The recognition program is available to all TWB volunteers working on the Rohingya Refugee Response.
However, there are a number of pre-requisites:
• You need to have an account on the Kató Platform
• You need to have completed the TWB Introduction to Humanitarian Translation course
(estimated time: 2 hours).

• You need to complete the application form that includes two sections:
• Section 1 : compliance with TWB policies, financial obligations and personal information.
You can find all documents in this zip folder. You need to download the files at this link and
complete and sign where necessary:
• Bank and payment details
• Signed TWB Child Protection policy
• Introduction to Humanitarian Translation certificate
• W8 or W9
• Read our Anti-Fraud Policy (no signing needed)

• Section 2: a multiple choice assessment to ensure you have read and understand the
following documents:
• TWB Code of Conduct and Eligibility Criteria
• Rules on sexual conduct for humanitarian workers in English or in your native language.

Once you have completed the application procedure we will check your application and send you
confirmation within 7 days.

1 Why do you need my personal details, and how are you going to use them?
We perform pre-payment checks to make sure the person we are sending the recognition to is
not involved in any illegal activities. Any information you provide here will be used only for the
purpose of issuing the benefits for this program. Your information will not be shared with any
third parties and may be deleted at your request, or if the Community Recognition Program
for the Rohingya Refugee Response ends. You can find all information regarding our Privacy
Policy and how we collect, use, and disclose information here.

2 What are the payment options?

We can make payments via PayPal, TransferWise, bank transfer and Western Union, depending
on what works best in your country.

3 Am I still considered a volunteer, or am I now a paid TWB contributor?

The Community Recognition Program for the Rohingya Refugee Response aims to recognize
the time, effort, and skills you have donated to our mission in your role as a volunteer
translator. This is not a payment of salary or compensation, but rather a way to enable you to
volunteer further with us and to cover some of the expenses you have incurred during your
time as a volunteer. You are not an employee of TWB, as you are not paid for your work and
you do not have a contract of employment. The work you do is of your own free will and you
may end your cooperation with TWB at any time, without previous notice.

4 How long will this program last?

The Community Recognition Program for the Rohingya Refugee Response is a pilot project
that we are testing now for the first time and we hope to make it available for the rest of
the volunteer community. It is very likely that the format will change over time, and that the
program in general will see some variations. Depending on the demand, response to this
program and internal budget, TWB reserves the right to suspend or terminate it without
notice.

5 Can you send the recognition for expenses for me to another person?
All recognition for expenses, are personal and they have to be sent to you. We can’t send them
to anyone else who is not you, not even a relative.

6 How often are my points updated? How can I check how many points I have?
The points are verified on a monthly basis. At the beginning of each month you will receive an
email from recognition@translatorswithoutborders.org with an update on your points balance,
level and the number of points you need to unlock the next threshold. We will also inform you
when you unlock a new award/threshold. If you wish to access any related benefits, please let
us know.

7 Why do you credit only 0.5 points per word revised? Sometimes I have to retranslate
the whole text!
As a general rule, revising a text should take much less time than translating it. We wanted
this difference to be reflected in our point crediting. If you are a reviser, you should not need
to retranslate a text or see a machine-translated text. Any translations that a Kató translator
submits must read fluently and should accurately convey the meaning of the original. If you
believe you are being asked to revise an unedited machine translation, or you see that you
will need to retranslate the text, please let your project manager or your Language Lead know.
