CHEMISTRY
Paragraph for Question Nos. 57 to 58
The dipole moment is a quantitative measure of the degree of charge separation in a molecule.

CHEMISTRY
The polarity of a bond, such as that in HCl, is characterized by a separation of electric charge. We
can represent this in HCl by indicating partial charges, + and – , on the atoms.
 
H  Cl
Any molecule that has a net separation of charge, as in HCl, has a dipole moment. A molecule in
which the distribution of electric charge is equivalent to charges + and – separated by a distance
d has dipole moment equal to d. Dipole moments are usually measured in units of debyes (D). In
S units, dipole moments are measured in coulomb-meters (C – m), and 1D = 3.34 × 10–30 C • m.
Each bond dipole, like a force, is a vector quantity; that is, it has both magnitude and direction.
Like forces, two dipoles of equal magnitude but opposite direction cancel each other.
Molecules which are symmetrical about the central atom (for example, linear, trigonal planar and
tetrahedral) have zero dipole moments; that is, the molecules are nonpolar. Those molecules
which are unsymmetrical (for example, bent and trigonal pyramidal) can have non zero dipole
moments; that is, they can give polar molecules.

57. Which of the molecule has non zero dipolemoment?

(A) PCl5 (B) SO3 (C) PF2Cl3 (D) PF3Cl2

58. Which of the following molecules is non polar?
