Title of the Project

Banana Leaves as an Alternative Food Container

II. Rational of the Project

A Thailand supermarket came up with a genius way to reduce plastic packaging: wrap its
produce in banana leaves instead. The banana leaf packaging comes from
the Rimping supermarket in Chiangmai, Thailand. Also in Quezon Province (Philippines)
implement of using banana leaves as food container.
According to Forbes, only nine percent of the nine billion tons of plastic produced gets to be
recycled. It cited data from the United Nations Environment Programme that there will be
approximately 12 billion tons of plastic in the world by 2050. Research also suggested that
disposable plastic products can take over 400 years before it can decompose. Meanwhile,
durable ones such as bottles, disposable diapers and beer can take up to 450 years. In this
time frame, they can harm sea creatures, pollute the environment and put humans at risk of
contamination.
One thing to consider is the relative cost of plastic versus banana leaves. In tropical locations,
banana leaves are readily available locally and could be acquired for free depending on the
quantity needed. In more temperate locations the use of banana leaves could be significantly
more expensive than plastic. However, using local biodegradable products could be a good
alternative in locations where bananas don't grow.

III. Condition
Food served on the banana leaves absorb the polyphenol which are said to prevent many
lifestyle diseases. They are also said to have an anti- bacterial properties that can possibly kill
the germs in food. The mature banana leaf consists largely of fibrous plant materials,
including lignin and cellulose. Although your body can’t digest fiber, this rough materials
promotes healthy digestion by easing the movement of wastes through your digestive tract.

IV. Objectives
This Banana Leaves as an Alternative Food Container aims to lessen the plastic that can
damage the environment and cause land, water and air pollution. While it looks like they use
some plastic for adhering the label, this method significantly reduces the amount of plastic
required. They are simply wrapped in a banana leaf and secured using a flexible piece of
bamboo. Banana leaves are a great alternative to plastic as the leaf is large, thick and supple
enough to be folded. The use of banana leaves to wrap food in has a long history. In some
tropical regions of Mexico, tamales are wrapped in banana leaves. Hawaiians use banana
leaves during pig roasts to protect the pig from the hot lava rocks. They are also used to wrap
sticky rice in southeast Asia. Using banana leaves also aims to plant many banana trees. It has
a good source of carbohydrates, fiber, and potassium.
V. Persons Involve
 Consumer
 Stall owner
 Companies selling banana leaves
 Customers
 Farmers
VI. Methodology
 Banana Leaves
 Toothpick

Steps:

1. First cut the leaf into a circle using a large bowl

2. Then soak the leaf in water to make them flexible
3. Now fold them using a round bowl or glass and use your toothpicks to pin the edges
together.

VII. Possible Result or Outcome

It will help to reduce using plastic and it is eco- friendly. We can eliminate plastic by utilizing
banana/ coconut leaves in packaging what we sell. It may seem hard and time consuming but
in this simple way, we can hold an event or sell our product without generating plastic ways.
Let us practice the use of sustainable packaging and eliminate single use plastic to save our
environment.
