LEARNING FROM POST INDEPENDENCE ARCHITECTURE – FRAMEWORK

The objective of this framework is to equip you with the necessary perspectives that are required
to gather, organize, edit, frame, present and conclude your views on your cited project. Keeping
the framework and the below mentioned criteria in mind proceed with the assignment.

You are required to go through the L2 List of project PDF very thoroughly. You may have to
research, read, synthesize it several times before the obvious structures or patterns emerge that
help you recognize core subject of any research work that are shown to be cited projects. You can
conduct your Identifying. Learning from Post Independence Architecture analysis and gather your
base information using the following framework parameters in mind to refine your base
understandings:

Kavel K / 2014 / Carve

Kavel K is a skating, sports- and youth facility which attracts a wide range of user groups. The
public space and the building are designed as a unity; the facade and the skate-cradle even 'melt
together'.

Friendship Centre/ 2011 / Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury

The Centre serves and brings together some of the poorest of poor in the country and -by extension
- in the world, yet in the extreme limitation of means was a search for the luxury of light and
shadows of the economy and generosity of small spaces; of the joy of movement and discovery in
the bare and the essential.

Oasia Hotel Downtown / 2016 / WOHA

Oasia Hotel Downtown is a prototype of land use intensification for the urban tropics. Unlike the
sleek and sealed skyscrapers that evolved out of the temperate west, this tropical “living tower”
offers an alternative image to the sleek technology of the genre.

Apple Store Fifth Avenue / 2019 / Foster + Partners

The plaza is the perfect stage for celebrating Apple’s passions: photography, music, art and design,
coding, and more. Wide steps along the edges invite people up into the space, to gather in a
bustling epicenter of urban life.

Bait ur Rouf / 2012 / Marina Tabassum

A colonnade, a group of light wells and perforated brickwork allow light and air to reach the prayer
hall of this mosque. Bait ur rouf designed in a way that it is interconnecting different spaces,
thereby, creating a pattern using light and ventilation. Simplicity is the intent, monastic is the feel.

Matrimandir / 2008 / Roger Anger

The Matrimandir is an edifice of spiritual significance for practitioners of Integral yoga, in the
center of Auroville. The Geodesic dome is covered by golden discs and reflects sunlight, which gives
the structure its characteristic radiance. Matrimandir does not belong to any particular religion or
section.

HACHI Serviced Apartment / 2018 / Octane architect & design

The building composes of several modular gable stories, each of them is orderly differentiated,
including different depth, lath orientation and height. With a perfect combination of those
modules that makes them like harmony rhythm as if the building is a vertical village.

Cube Houses / 1977 / Piet Blom

Cube houses are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and in the Netherlands, designed by
architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": Blom tilted the cube of a
conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents
a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.

Green Village / 2010 / IBUKU

The Bamboo houses are designed and built around the natural contours of each plot with rare
views of the river front and the volcanoes of Bali. The concept is to create beautiful living spaces, in
which people can live where luxury and comfort fit into natural landscapes.

Marina Bay Sands integrates seven site-specific works by artists handpicked by Moshe Safdie to
enhance the visitor experience.

Virast E Khalsa / 1999 / Moshi Safdie

The structure gives an impression of connectivity .Being an asymmetrical structure ,of


collaborating geometrical shapes, the structure still bonds with the natural reservoir surrounded
by it. The uniformity and the contrast of the walls gives justice to the nature in which it blends.

Red Brick House/ 1988 / Nair Gandhi

The house is staged on an elevated platform, a beached boat of brick, with sandstone paving
below echoing the beach behind and leading through a ribbed underbelly of archways and flying
buttresses, past twin submersible-like bedrooms tucked into the landscape, and onto a sea of lawn
at the far end.

Quinta Monroy Housing /2003 / Alejandro Aravena

One of his most famous social projects is the Quinta Monroy Housing in northern Chile. Elemental’s
solution was to partially build each house with the most fundamental infrastructures, allowing the
families to move in right away, but also providing the framework for incremental expansions.

Longxing Monastery / 1279AD / Song Dynasty

The Longxing Monastery or Longxing Temple is an ancient Buddhist Monastery located near the
town of Zheng ding in Hebei Province, China, approximately 15 kilometres north of the provincial
capital of Shijiazhuang. It has been referred to as the "First Temple south of Beijing".

Lotus Riverside Building / 2007 /Shanghai Zhong Xin Construction

The Lotus Riverside is a residential apartment complex in Shanghai consisting of eleven 13-story
buildings.

Ray and Maria stata center / 2004 / Frank Gehry

In contrast to the MIT custom of referring to buildings by their numbers rather than their official
names, the complex is usually referred to as "Stata" or "the Stata Center” Above the fourth floor,
the building splits into two distinct structures: the Gates Tower and the Dreyfoos Tower, often
called "G Tower" and "D Tower" respectively. .

Taj Mahal / 1653 / Shah Jahan

The Taj Mahal incorporates and expands on design traditions of Persian and earlier Mughal
Architecture. The base structure is a large multi-chambered cube with chamfered corners forming
an unequal eight-sided structure that is approximately 55 meters (180 ft) on each of the four long
sides.

Al-Aqsa Mosque/ 1035 / Ali az-Zahir

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is characteriic oThe al-Aqsa Mosque has seven aisles of hypostyle naves with
several additional small halls to the west and east of the southern section of the building. There
are 121 stained glass windows in the mosque from the Abbasid and Fatimid eras early Islamic. The
al-Aqsa Mosque has seven aisles of hypostyle naves.
