Radio Signals

Radios!

Main Function: While there are many different kinds of radio devices, we’re most familiar with
radios for listening to music and talk shows.

Details: The first human-controlled radio waves were sent across the Atlantic Ocean and
received by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901. Nowadays, we have portable radios, radios in vehicles,
and loads of other technology based on the use of radio waves.

Range: Quite far - a few hundred kilometers before signal interference occurs.

Cellular Phones

Main Function: A cellular phone is a portable device for communicating over long distances in
real time.

Details: When you speak, your phone converts your voice into an electrical signal, which is then
transmitted as radio waves to your friend’s phone and converted back into understandable
audio. A smart phone uses cellular technology to make phone calls.

Range: High range - imagine making phone calls around the world!
Bluetooth Devices

Main Function: A Bluetooth device works by using radio waves to make a wireless connection
to another device like your phone or laptop.

Details: Bluetooth devices can be used for many things such as making phone calls, listening to
music, or navigating across a computer screen using a wireless mouse.
