JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Interpreter

POSTHOLDER:

GRADE: Grade 3 (below the mid-point bar) 30 hours 39 weeks

LINE MANAGER: Head of Learning Support

JOB PURPOSE: To provide interpretation to support teaching and learning outcomes.

LEVEL DESCRIPTION
Working under the direction of teaching staff or more senior support staff, whether with the whole
class, a small groups or an individual pupil .
All duties will be carried out within recognised procedures or guidelines and teaching or senior staff will
be available for support and guidance.
The post holder will be expected to have some expertise/specialism.
May include ad hoc duties which require some initiative.
There will be some need to interpret information or situations and to solve varied problems. More
complex problems will be referred to line manager.
No requirement to supervise others, but may demonstrate tasks to new colleagues or give advice and
guidance to others.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support for students:

 Work with students and provide interpretation in a variety of setting e.g. classroom, small groups
and one-to-one.
 Support teaching and learning outcomes by ensuring good communication and understanding.
 To liaise with safeguarding officers in accordance with school policy if and when appropriate.
 To ensure Pastoral Teams are kept informed of any underlying emotional or social factors affecting
students’ progress.

Support for the teacher

 Provide support for the teacher during lessons.


 Provide interpretation to support communication with parents/carers and the wider community.
 Attend meetings with Heads of Year and provide interpretation.
 Maintain records of student needs and progress.
 Assist teaching staff to ensure that the aims and objectives of the school are achieved.

Support for the curriculum

 Undertake tasks to support the curriculum and assist with events organised as part of the
curriculum.
 Support implementation of Government initiatives under the direction of the teacher.

Support for school

 Attend and contribute to appropriate review meetings, if required by the Principal.


 When not required for interpretation, undertake other duties commensurate with the grade
including classroom teaching support.

The duties of this post could vary from time to time as a result of new legislation, changes in technology or policy changes;
appropriate training may be given to enable the post holder to undertake this new/varied work.
