You are a full time employee at a small timber truss and framing factory. The factory’s employees are very
culturally diverse.
You have noticed that due to the bad weather conditions caused by the arrival of winter, the workers who
regularly take cigarette breaks have begun to smoke close to the doorways, undercover. This means that the
cigarette fumes are coming into the factory and makes it unpleasant for the non-smokers to step outside for
fresh air or to eat on their breaks. Apart from your distaste in the smell of cigarettes you have heard that
passive smoking can harm your health. You decide to bring this to the attention of management and establish
a program that promotes employee health.
1. First step you must take is to research and collect information on the relevant employee health issues.
To give your investigation credibility you need to collect both primary and secondary data. Explain the
difference between the two types of data. Give examples of the information you would collect and
how you can access these information.
2. Conduct research on the effect of smoking in the workplace. Critically analyse your findings in a report
that you will give to your management to convince them to support your program.
3. Develop and explain in detail two (2) options you believe will address the issue of cigarette smoke.
4. Who would you consult with when you are developing program scope and objectives? What planning
need to be done for the program?
5. Develop an overall program management plan to address the issue of cigarette smoke. What elements
would you include in your plan?
6. explain why it is important to monitor program progress
To gain competence for this unit, you must correctly answer all of the following questions. Written responses may
be recorded in additional pages and attached or entered in a word processing document.
● Write a one (1) page report on the process that is required to identify and collect information on employee
health issues in a workplace. Discuss the potential difficulties of conducting reviews and provide examples
of specific behaviours that encourage open and honest communication. Review the possible findings and
their implications for the organisation. What are the options available to you to address the identified
health issues and how can you obtain support from senior managers to support your recommendations?
● List down at least three (3) employee health issues and identify the options that are available to improve
health outcomes.
● There are a lot of smokers in your organisation and you are finding that it is impacting the organisation
negatively as the employees take extended smoke breaks and are often more susceptible to illnesses.
Develop a program that you feel can help promote personal effectiveness and minimise this issue. What
type of resources would you need? Prepare an overall program management plan and discuss this plan
with your assessor.
● The management of your organisation plans to introduce a healthy canteen and all of the unhealthy foods
(which are very popular) are going to be removed. There are no alternative food outlets near your
workplace. You are responsible for the introduction of the program in the workplace. You have advocated
for the introduction of a healthy canteen as part of an overall personal effectiveness program, the need for
which has arisen from your analysis of employee health. You are required to prepare a strategy document
describing how you will introduce the concept of a healthy canteen to the workers, how you will deal with
negative reactions and how you will get the workers to support the canteen and the menu. Your report also
includes the support and assistance you need to mentor the members within the healthy food team (largely
made up of human resources and administration personnel as well as a representative from each
department within the organisation) as well as how you intend to implement and monitor the program.
Part 1
You are working in the human resources department of a manufacturing company in Melbourne. You have been
asked to write a report to the headquarters based in Sydney so that you can build an onsite gymnasium and fitness
centre as part of the personal effectiveness health program you are spearheading. There are more than 500
employees in your company and a fitness centre would be of great benefit as a lot of the work demands physical
fitness as well as a place for employees to release stress after a hard day at work. 80% of the staff has signed a
petition paper requesting for the gym and pressure has been increasing steadily for the past year to get this project
started.
As a representative of the human resources department, it is your responsibility to write a report that is well
researched and persuasive. Your report should develop the program scope and objective of the gym in consultation
with appropriate research by industry consultants, colleagues and managers.
Check and proofread the report for spelling, grammar and sentence construction accuracy. Ensure that the format
is adhered to and that you have adequately researched the topic to make your report as convincing as possible.
Part 2
It has been six months since the project has begun and you have been conducting regular progress reports to your
Human Resources manager (assessor) as well as to headquarters. The project is coming along well and the gym and
fitness center will be launched in a weeks’ time.
You are now required to prepare a short presentation in front of the Board of Directors (made up of your assessor
and fellow classmates). The presentation looks at evaluating the project.
You are required to base the presentation on the report you have conducted. In your presentation cover:
● The evaluation methods you have outlined in the report and measure it against the hypothetical project
that you have carried out. You can research other projects that have been carried out and use the statistics
in your presentation e.g. 10 treadmills have been installed, 3 fitness rooms have been built within 2 months,
etc. This is up to you but it must correspond with the timelines scheduled in your report
● Evaluate the progress of the project
● How you can use the evaluation process to continuously improve and benefit future corporate plans
