Adverbs

An adverb is a modifier. It can be used to


modify verbs and adjectives, as well as
other adverbs.

Adverbs can be used to address the


following questions:

How? When? Where? To what extent?

Adjectives

It is important to differentiate between


adverbs and adjectives.

Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns.

Examples:

“He is a wealthy man.”

Please note
Adverbs can be formed from most adjectives by
adding an “-ly” ending. For example:

adjective: quick  adverb: quickly


sad  sadly
graceful  gracefully
bad  badly
generous  generously
ignorant  ignorantly

Please note
There are some important exceptions
when converting adjectives into adverbs:

For adjectives that end with a consonant


followed by “y,” replace the “y” with an “i”
before adding the “-ly.”
Examples:
adjective: happy  adverb: happily
lucky  luckily
busy  busily

There are some important exceptions
when converting adjectives into adverbs:

For adjectives that end in “-able,” “-ible,” or


“-le,” just replace the “e” with “y.”
Examples:
adjective: simple  adverb: simply
comfortable  comfortably

So... how exactly do adverbs work?

Adverbs can modify verbs:

We waited patiently.

Adverbs can modify adjectives:

The music was considerably loud.

Adverbs can modify other adverbs:

He walked extremely quickly.

 How did he walk? Quickly

 How quickly? Extremely.

Adverbs can also modify entire sentences:

Actually, I thought dinner was excellent.

Unfortunately, we have to leave early.

Presumably, the line will be very long.

Apparently, the rain washed away the graffiti.

There are also many other adverbs that are
not created from adjectives using “-ly.” For
example:
She is working again.

He almost reached the top.

We are very excited.

You are always right.

An adverbial is an adverb or group of


other words, such as an adverbial phrase,
that modifies a
verb or sentence.
Adverb
All of the adverbs from
the previous slides are
considered to be adverbial
adverbials (“quickly,”
“extremely,” “considerably,”

Further, adverbials can also take the form of


clauses or phrases that answer the same
questions as adverbs:

How? When? Where? To what extent?

The student was acting like he didn't care about


graduating high school.

 How was the student acting?
