SPSS
Install SPSS 20.0 on a personal computer

Document Purpose
This guide will demonstrate how to request access to SPSS 20.0 and then install it.

1. License Authorisation and Annual Renewal


• You will need to license the copy of SPSS 20 as part of the installation process.
• The license for SPSS 20 must be renewed annually
• You will be advised when the current license expires in the email you receive when you have requested
access. When it does expire your copy of SPSS will stop working. See section 6 for how to renew your
license

2. Request access to SPSS 20.0


• The University has a site license for SPSS 20, which allows staff and students of the University to install
SPSS 20.0 on a personal computer. You will need to request access to download the installation files or
if you are on campus you can order a copy of the SPSS 20 installation disk from the Help Zone in the
Library
• Contact the IT Service Desk by emailing ithelp@le.ac.uk or by phone 0116 252 2253 to request access to
download SPSS or to order the SPSS 20.0 installation disk, or if you need any help with installing SPSS
• All staff and students are required to complete a copyright form before they obtain the SPSS code.
• Associates of the University, or affiliated staff, must declare their intended use of SPSS when they
contact the IT Service Desk

3. Before installing SPSS


• To install SPSS 20 you must have access to administrator account on your computer
• It is important to remove an old version of SPSS before you install SPSS 20.
• To remove SPSS from a Windows PC:
o Close all windows and programs
o Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features
o Find SPSS in the list
o Right click on SPSS and choose Uninstall

Disable antivirus software


If you have antivirus software running during the installation of SPSS can cause a number of problems when
using the software. To prevent these from happening, ensure your antivirus software is disabled during the
installation of SPSS. Visit the website of your antivirus provider for instructions on how to do this.

4. Download SPSS 20.0 or obtain the install DVD


You can either download SPSS 20.0 or obtain a DVD available at the Help Zone in the Library.

4.1. Download the SPSS 20.0 Installation Files


• To download the SPSS 20 installation files you must first request access (see section 2)
• You will be sent an email with instructions to visit https://swdist.le.ac.uk/spss20 from where you can
download the installation files, which include a copy of this document
• Use your University IT account to login. Enter uol\ followed by your username and your password

4.2. Use the SPSS 20.0 installation DVD


1. Go to the Help Zone in the Library and request a SPSS 20.0 DVD
2. Insert the DVD into your computer
3. Go to Start > Computer
4. Browse the DVD and find SPSS_Statistics_20_win32_

5. Install SPSS
If you have either downloaded or located SPSS_Statistics_20_win32_.exe on the DVD you can:

1. Right click on SPSS_Statistics_20_win32_.exe


2. Choose Run as Administrator

3. Choose Next

4. Select the Site Licence. Then click Next.

5. Choose Accept the terms in the licence agreement. Then select Next.

6. Enter UOL as the Username and Organisation

7. Optional: Choose an additional Help Language. English will be installed by default. Click Next.

8. Choose the Destination folder for where to install SPSS 20.0

9. Click Install

10. Uncheck Click here to register for product updates… and click OK to finish

6. License or renew your copy of SPSS 20.0


In order to license or renew SPSS 20.0 you will need to request access:
https://swww2.le.ac.uk/offices/ithelp/my-computer/programs/home/spss/request-access/

See section 2 for further information.

1. Open SPSS 20.0 by going to Start > SPSS 20 > IBM SPS 20 Statistics
2. Ensure Licence my product now is selected. Click Next.

3. Copy and paste the code sent to you by IT Services (see Section 2) into the Enter Code box. Click Next.

4. Click Next

5. To complete click on Finish. your installation of SPSS 20.0 should now be registered or renewed

7. Install the software patch for SPSS 20


• There is a patch that must be applied to your copy of SPSS 20 for it to function properly
• You must be logged on to your administrator account on your computer to apply the patch.

1. To install the patch go to https://swdist.le.ac.uk/spss20


2. Use your University IT account to login. Enter uol\ followed by your username and your password
3. Click on SPSS20-WIN32-FP001.exe to download the patch
4. After it has finished downloaded, locate the file in your Downloads folder
5. Right click on SPSS20-WIN32-FP001.exe
6. Choose Run as Administrator

7. Double click on SPSS20-WIN32-FP001.exe to install the patch

8. Click Next.

9. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and then click Next.

10. Click Install.

11. Click OK

12. You will need to restart the computer to complete the installation. Select Yes.

8. Further Information
8.1 Obtain a SPSS licence over the telephone due to problems with
authorisation over the Internet or have no Internet access
1. Contact IBM SPSS on Tel: 0870 010 1952
2. Provide the following details:

• Customer Number: 291648


• Lock code (Found on the Production Authorisation screen – see Section 6, step 2)

• Authorisation code provided by IT Service Desk

3. You will be provided with SPSS licence to be used on your personal PC or laptop
