CHAPTER - 3
WORK PROGRESS
3.0 GENERAL:
Generally, “Internship is any official or formal program to provide practical
experience for beginners in an occupation or profession”.
An internship is a short-term professional experience related to a student‟s major
or career goals. Students generally work a minimum of eight hours per week or a
maximum of 40 hours per week (full time), usually for one academic term. The work is
performed in a professional environment under the guidance and supervision of a staff
member with expertise in the student‟s field of interest.

Although the work may be similar to some part-time jobs or volunteer

experiences, an internship is identified by the intentional, self-directed learning and
student reflection about the work experience.

Through internships, students explore career options, test their choice of academic
major and develop professional skills and experience. Students may participate in
internships for academic credit or for experience only.

3.2 WORKS CARRIED OUT DURING INTERNSHIP TRAINING:

In the four Weeks of Internship period. I worked in the following sections.
 Surveying and leveling
 Excavation
 Treating with ATT
 Compaction
 Laying of PCC
 Shuttering works
 Bar bending works
 Laying of Footing concrete
 Plinth beam
 Rising of columns
 Slab Shuttering

Tasks performed at site are discussed in detail below:

3.2.1 SURVEYING AND LEVELING:

Levelling is a process of determining the height of one level relative to another. It
is used in surveying to establish the elevation of a point relative to a datum, or to establish
a point at a given elevation relative to a datum and Surveying is the art of determination
of relative position of points on the surface, below the surface or even above the surface.
In our site dumpy level and total stations are used for levelling and surveying.

Fig - 3.2: Total Station

3.2.2 EXCAVATION:
Excavation at the site is done by using the heavy excavating equipment like
Hitachi, JCB. As the excavation depth is more hence there, we will get the different kinds
of soils and rocks at different depth levels like normal soil, soft rock and hard rock etc.
The earth is excavated and the excavated material is putted into the hauling equipment‟s
which will takes the earth material and goes to the dumping site and dumps there. The
various hauling equipment‟s used were dumpers and Volvo dump trucks. Volvo man
dump truck is a very strong hauling equipment which costs around 1.5crores. Excavation
of hard rock at the site is done by Blasting and very hard rock by the use of breakers.

3.2.3 TREATING WITH ATT:

For many years, the traditional method of controlling sub-terranean termites was
to apply a liquid pesticide, known as a termiticide, to the soil. This chemical treatment
relied on the application of a chemical barrier around and beneath the structure designed
to block all possible route of termite entry. Usually 1litres of ATT with 20litres of water
mixture is used for the purification of soil.

3.2.4 COMPACTION:
Compaction is a process of increasin soil desity and removing air, usally by
mechanicalmeans. The following machines are used in our site:

Smooth Wheeled Rollers: It is important euipment for compaction. It consist large steel
drum in front and one or two wheel on rear end. The roller weighing around 10tonns.
Vibratory Plate Compactor: Vibratory plate compactor is used for compacting different
types of soils in narrow and conjusted area where it is not possible to use large
equipment. The compactor of weighing 7tonns and 0.5tonns. The rollers are passed over
the area having less density and less bearing capacity. To increase its density and decrease
the settlement of the structure constructed. After compacting the earth the density and
moisture content in soil is checked by Rapid moisture meter instrument by taking the core
in the different places and then determined. If the reguired density is not achieved then
the number of passings are increased before further works.

3.2.5 LAYING OF PCC:

Plain cement concrete is laid over the excavated ground from the RL of 105.1m
for the thickness of 150mm after which it comes to the RL of 105.25m.The PCC is laid
over the entire area. The concrete used for the PCC is of grade M7.5. PCC is a
construction material generally used as a binding material and is composed of cement and
other cementatious material such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate. Plain cement
concrete is used provide rigid impervious bed to RCC in foundation where the earth is
soft and yielding.

PCC can be used over brick flat soling or without brick flat soling. PCC in the
foundations used to provide a plain surface beneath the footing and also to improve
bearing capacity of underlying surface of footing or foundation. Plain cement concrete of
grade M15 is used for the floor. Generally the mix of concrete used for flooring
specification is 1:1.5:3(cement, sand, and stone aggregates) and it laid over the concrete
base (1:4:8), which is almost 3 to 4 inches thick plain cement concrete (pcc) base.
