INVISIBLE CITIES
Online Greenlight Review
16th October 2019
My Chosen City
Isaura
■ City of the thousand wells
■ Rise over a deep subterranean lake
■ On all sides, where ever they dig they are able to bring up water
■ Green boarder in the dark outline of this buried lake
■ Buckets rise suspended from a cable, in the revolving pulleys
■ Pump handles
■ Blades of the windmills draw up water from the drillings
■ Reservoirs perched on stilts over roofs (Water towers)
■ In the slender arches of the aqueducts, columns of water in vertical pipes
■ From the plungers, drains, to the weathercocks (weather vanes) that surmount the airy
scaffoldings
■ A city that moves entirely upwards (tall buildings)
Mission Statement
The city I chose for this project is Isaura, mainly because I was already able to
picture it whilst reading the text. Therefore, I feel confident enough to expand on
my initial ideas. The thumbnails I created mainly focused on the functionality
and the purpose of this city, compared to others it comes across a lot more
compact as it is “a city that moves entirely upwards.” So, I know that it would be
expected to produce a range of tall buildings.
Considering the colour palette, I’d be focusing on more natural colours of greens
and browns. However, I am thinking about putting an autumnal feel to it where I
can use colours such as reds and bright oranges. Lastly as shown is this palette
image, blues are also important colours because it is a city that revolves around
water.
When thinking about the lighting, I’d be focusing on setting this city during
daylight. However, I may consider using one of the exterior shots at an early
evening time, where I’d be able to exaggerate more on the shadows and external
lighting; to give this city more of an atmospheric feel.
The types of materials I’d be focusing on using to create this city would mostly
be wood and stone. This is due to the environment that this city is set in; being
on top of a lake suggests that there would be lots of natural resources around
that the residents would of used to build their homes and other buildings.
