Equations of Motion
1) A ball moves 40m in last second of its journey & 10m in the 1 st second of its journey.
If it starts from rest find the total distance moved by the ball. [62.5 m]
2) A particle is projected vertically upward from the top of a tower of height ‘h’ with
velocity u. it takes 6 sec to reach the maximum height and 20 sec to reach the
ground. Find the values of ‘h’ & ‘u’. [60 m/sec, 800 m]
3) A ball is dropped from the top of a tower of height 39.2m. At the same time another
ball is projected from the bottom with a velocity of 19.6 m/sec. When & where the
two balls meet each other? [Mid air collision is not possible]
4) Can the speed of a particle vary if its velocity is constant? Can reverse be true?
5) A ball is thrown vertically up with velocity u 0. Find its velocity at the moment it
reaches half the maximum height. What time it will take to reach that height.
6) A ball is dropped from a balloon going up with a velocity of 40 m/sec at t = 5sec from
start. Find the time taken by the ball to reach the ground and the velocity just
before it strikes the ground. [(4 + 2 √14) sec, 20 √14 m/sec.]
7) A body falls from rest. In the last two seconds it covers half of the total distance. Find
the total time of the journey and total distance.[2 (2 + √2) sec, 246 m]
8) A ball is thrown vertically up with an initial velocity u m/sec. Another ball is thrown
upward with the same velocity ‘n’ seconds later. When and where do they meet

9) A body takes ‘t1’ seconds to reach the ground if projected upward from the top of a

Prove that if it is dropped from the same height it will take t =  t1 t2 sec. to reach
the ground.
10) The driver and the guard of a train of length ‘l’ crosses a pole with velocities ‘u’ &
‘v’ respectively. Find the velocities with which the mid point of the train will cross

12) A parachutist bails out from an aeroplane and after dropping through a distance of
40 m, he opens the parachute, and decelerates at 2 ms–2. If he reaches the ground
with a speed 2 ms–1, for how long is he in the air? At what height did he bail out

13) A rifle bullet loses 1/20 of its velocity in passing through a plank what is the least

14) A car accelerates from rest at a constant rate ∝ for some time and then it decelerates

velocity of 39.2 ms–1. On its return, it misses the tower and finally strikes the
ground. Calculate –
(i) The greatest elevation
(ii) Velocity with which it strikes the ground
(iii) The time it take to reach the ground [176.4 m, 58.8 m, 10 s]
17) The position time variation of a particle is given by x = 3t 2 + t + 4. What is the –
(i) Average velocity of the particle from t = 0 to t = 2s.
(ii) Instantaneous velocity at t = 2s. [7 m/s, 13 m/s]
18) A stone is dropped from a height of 490 m and 2 s later, another similar stone is
thrown from the same height with a velocity v. if the two stones reach the ground
simultaneously, what is the value of f v. [22.05 m/s]
19) A rocket is made to accelerate at 25 m/s 2 for 5 s and after that the engine is shut
off. The rocket continues to move up. To what approximate maximum height the
rocket will go? (g = 10 ms –2) [1100 m]
20) An object having initial velocity of 15 ms–1 is accelerated at a constant rate of
3 ms–2 for t sec. If the average velocity for this duration is twice the initial
velocity. What is the value of t? [10 s]

22) With what velocity a ball be projected vertically upward so that the distance

acceleration. [0.218 m/s2]
25) A bus starts from rest with a constant acceleration of 5 ms–2. At the same time a car
travelling with a constant velocity of 50 ms–1 overtakes the bus. Find –
(i) At what instant will bus overtake the car?
(ii) How fast will the bus be travelling then?
26) An electron is shot with a constant speed 5 × 10 6 ms–1 into a region where an
electric field produces a deceleration of magnitude 1.25 × 10 14 ms–2. How far will it
travel before coming to rest? [10 cm]
27) In fig, ball 1 is released from rest at the top of a smooth inclined plane and at the
same instant ball 2 is projected upward form the foot of the plane with such a
velocity that they meet half way-up the plane. Determine –
(i) The velocity of projection

28) To stop a car, first you require a certain reaction time to begin braking then the car
slows at a constant rate. Suppose that the total distance moved by your car during
these two phases is 20.2 m, when its initial speed is 72 Kmh–1 and is 31.5m when
its initial speed is 90 Kmh–1. What are (a) your reaction time (b) magnitude of
acceleration.
