Risk and Reliability Engineering
This course aims to introduce the basic principles and
fundamental techniques of risk management and reliability
engineering. Relevant concepts covered are of interest to
most engineers as industry is increasingly adopting more
risk-oriented approaches for optimisation of decision making
process across a variety of engineering disciplines and related
applications. Delegates attending this course will develop
directly applicable skills through practical engagement of the
most widely applied methods.

Dr Athanasios Kolios
Dr Athanasios Kolios (Dip Eng, MSc, PhD, MBA, PGCAP, CEng MIMechE, FHEA) is a Senior Lecturer
in Risk Management and Reliability Engineering and Director of the Energy Doctoral Training
Programme at Cranfield University. His research expertise includes the reliability analysis using
non-intrusive stochastic expansions, risk-based design, analysis and operational management of
offshore/marine structures, and integrity assessment of ageing structures. He has a track record
in research council, industry sponsored and consultancy projects related to his area of expertise.
Dr Kolios has chaired sessions focusing on operational management of complex systems, has
authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and acts as a reviewer for
key journals. He currently lectures on the topics of Risk and Reliability Engineering and Engineering
Stress Analysis. Dr Kolios is a Chartered Engineering of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
(CEng MIMechE) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Iraklis Lazakis
Dr Iraklis Lazakis is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine
Engineering (NAOME) of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. On top of working in academia for
the last 9 years, Dr Lazakis has 10 years of industrial experience with regards to operations of ships
involving inspections, maintenance and repairs. Among others, he has attended and supervised
a number of surveys and dry-dockings of different ship types worldwide. He has developed his
expertise of risk, reliability and criticality based maintenance of ships in order to improve shipping
safety and reliability, criticality assessment and asset management. He has also led, participated
and contributed in industry, UK and EU funded research related projects in the fields of inspection,
condition monitoring, maintenance, reliability and risk analysis currently leading INCASS EC FP7
project among others.

Dr Mahmood Shafiee
Dr Mahmood Shafiee is a specialist in the area of Industrial and Systems Engineering and presently
is a Lecturer in Engineering Risk Analysis at Cranfield University, UK. His expertise is in the fields
of Reliability Engineering, Maintenance Optimisation, Inspection Planning, Residual Life Prediction
& Extension, Structural Health Assessment, Aging and Degradation Modelling, Probabilistic Risk
Analysis, Risk-based Integrity, Decision Making under Uncertainty, Infrastructure Asset Management,
Warranty & Service Reliability, and Maintenance Logistics. He has more than ten years of experience
in the area of Risk, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering within the Oil and Gas Energy,
Renewable Wind Energy, Railway Transport, Manufacturing and the Finance Industry Sectors. He has
published around fifty papers in top tier journals, has been plenary speaker and program committee
member of over twenty international workshops and conferences.
