COURSE CONTENTS
- Introduction to modelling and simulation in MATLAB’s
engineering institute located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. As
one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), off late it
is also recognized as an Institute of Eminence. Founded in
1959 with technical and financial assistance from the
former government of West Germany, it was the third IIT
that was established by the Government of India. IIT
Madras has been ranked as the top engineering institute
in India for four years in a row (2016-2019) by the
National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry
of Human Resource Development.
The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare established
the Ocean Engineering Center of IIT Madras in 1977, later
it became the Department of Ocean Engineering. The
Department is to act as a Center of Excellence for
advancing the frontiers of science and to provide
Break-through Technology as well as to develop education
and training programs in the field of Ocean Engineering.
INTRODUCTION
The marine energy systems as offshore wind turbines,
ocean current turbine/tidal turbine and the wave energy
based power take off systems like oscillating water
columns and floating buoys are subjected to extreme
loads in ocean environment. The experimentation of
these type of energy systems to study the dynamics
are expensive and time consuming even under laboratory
testing. These complex energy systems have to be
simplified for analysis for product development. This is
facilitated by developing models which are simplified
using current state of art mathematical modeling tools.
This symposium shall introduce the participants to find a
synergy between existing theories and capabilities of
computational tools such as MATLAB - Simscape in
SIMULINK environment & WEC-Sim. This workshop shall
be useful to the students and researchers who need a
brief introduction to initiate and work on mathematical
modeling using MATLAB and Simscape in SIMULINK.
Research Scholars, PG students and BTech students can
attend.
Simscape (Mechanical + Fluids).
- Introduction to WEC-Sim (Wave Energy Converter
Simulator).
- Discussion on wave energy and Simscape
Multibody Dynamics.
- Discussion on wind energy modeling and analysis.
NOTE: The participant should bring their own laptop.
 IIT Madras is a Campus-Wide License customer of
MathWorks. Students and faculty members can get free
access to our products.

 The participants can also get a MATLAB trial license by
making a MathWorks account with any email ID.
 The Participants must install, MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape,
Simscape Multibody and the Control System Toolbox.

REGISTRATION FEE
Registration is based on first come first serve basis. The
total number of candidates to attend this symposium is
limited to maximum 40 in number. The registration fee
are taken for the logistic purpose:
 For students: Rs 500 + 18% GST (Total Rs 590/-)
 For faculty members: Rs 2500 + 8% GST (Total Rs
2950/-)
