Physical Metallurgy Marks: (5x10=50)
TEST-1 Duration: 1.00hrs
1. (a) List the formula for calculating the short-range order (SRO) parameter of an intermetallic
compound and define the terms. Calculate the SRO for a completely ordered and completed
disordered intermetallic by taking the example of AuCu3.
(b) Explain Hume-Rothery rules for complete solid solution formation with examples.
(5+5=10)
2. Show the schematic variation of the free energy vs. composition curves for Liquid, ,  and 
phases at the temperatures shown in the phase diagram below. Discuss the construction and how
the composition of each phase in equilibrium at a given temperature is derived from the G-X curves.
(10 marks)

3. (a) Suppose a ternary alloy containing 40% A, 20%B and 40%C solidifies through a ternary eutectic
reaction to a mixture of , , and  phases with the following compositions: 80%A-5%B-15%C,10%A-
70%B-20%C, and 10%A-20%B-70%C respectively. What will be the mole fractions of , , and  in
the microstructure?
(b) Following is a solution for the composition profile as a function of distance and time when
homogenization of a sample with sinusoidal variation of initial composition.
x −t
C = C +  0 sin exp 
l   
Here l, ,  and C are constants. Prove by differentiation that the following equation is a solution to
Fick's second law. (5+5=10)
4. The metals A and B form an ideal liquid solution but are almost immiscible in the solid state. The
entropy of fusion of both A and B is 8.4 J.mol-1K-1 and the melting points are 1500K and 1300K
respectively. Assuming that the specific heats of the solid and liquid are identical, calculate the
eutectic composition and temperature in the AB phase diagram. (10 marks)

5. (a) For vacancy formation in Al, HV = 0.8 eV/atom and SV/R = 2. Calculate the equilibrium
vacancy concentration at 25 oC and 660 oC. What is the significance of this in precipitation hardening
of aluminium alloys?
(b) Estimate the change in the equilibrium melting point of copper cause by a change in pressure
of 10kbar. The molar volume of copper is 8x10-6 m3 for the liquid and 7.6x10-6 m3 for the solid
phase. The latent heat of fusion of copper is 13.05 kJ.mol-1 and melting point is 1085 oC.
