APPLICATIONS OF RLC CIRCUITS
Variable tuned circuits
The simple RLC series and parallel circuits are also called
variable tuned circuits. They are the circuits consisting of a
resistor(R), capacitor(C), and an inductor(L) connected in
series or parallel.
Applications of RLC circuits:
 Analogue radio channel tuning (i.e. Selection of a certain
narrow range of frequencies from total spectrum of
ambient radio waves) is the most common application of
variable tuned circuits. The tuning knob is attached to the
variable capacitor in the RLC circuit.
 Oscillators (a circuit that produces a periodic, oscillating
electronic signal, often a sine wave or a square wave.
Oscillators convert direct current (DC) from a power
supply to an alternating current signal.)
 Filters (a circuit which removes the unwanted
frequencies from the required output frequency.)
Filters
RLC circuits act as filters at resonance frequency.
Applications of RLC circuits:
 Sound equalizers are the best example of filters made
from RLC circuits.
 Band pass filters (filters which allow only a certain range
of frequencies to pass through) and band reject filters
(filters which block only a certain range of frequencies)
are also the applications of RLC circuits in making of
filters.
Oscillators
a circuit that produces a periodic, oscillating electronic signal,
often a sine wave or a square wave. They convert direct
current (DC) from a power supply to an alternating current
signal.
Applications of RLC circuits:
 Signal generators
 TV transmitters
Pulse discharge circuits
The circuits which allow only a specific frequency of signal to
pass through for a specific period of time are called pulse
discharge circuits.
Applications of RLC circuits:
 High voltage magnetic pulse generation (using capacitor
discharge technique).
 Capacitor Discharge Impulse Generators
Voltage multiplier
A voltage multiplier is an electrical circuit that converts AC
electrical power from a lower voltage to a higher DC voltage,
typically using a network of capacitors and diodes.
Applications of RLC circuits:

 The high-voltage supplies for cathode ray tubes often

use voltage multipliers with the final-stage smoothing
capacitor.
 Radio is the example of RLC circuit.
 Metal detector is a good example of RLC circuit.
 A common type of voltage multiplier used in high-energy
physics is the Cockcroft–Walton generator (which is used
as a particle accelerator in research).

APPLICATIONS OF LC OSCILLATORS
An electronic LC oscillator is an electronic circuit consisting of
inductor and capacitor that produces a
periodic, oscillating electronic signal, often a sine wave or
a square wave.
Series and parallel combinations:
 CMOS differential LC oscillators
 Switched resonators
 MOSFET based oscillators
Practical applications:

 Metal detector
 Radio
