Geosynthetics

Introduction
Definition of Geosynthetics

GEOSYNTHETICS can be simply defined as

SYNTHETIC MATERIALS used for

GEO-ENGINEERING applications

Geo-technical
Geo-hydraulic
Geo-environmental

Introduction
Monomers and polymers

• Monomers are small molecules H H

Ethylene
which may be joined together in a C=C
monomer
H H
repeating fashion to form more
Polymerisation
complex molecules called polymers process

• Polymers used for manufacturing

geosynthetics are derived from crude
oil and supplied in the form of resins

PE

Introduction
History of polymer

• Polymers (sometimes known as plastics) form the bulk of synthetic

materials used for geosynthetics (although some natural fibres are
included as synthetic materials in definition of geosynthetics)
• PVC (polyvinyl chloride) began commercial production in 1933
• LDPE (low density polyethylene) in 1939
• PA (polyamide), commonly known as Nylon, in 1939
• PET (polyester) in 1953
• HDPE (high density polyethylene) in 1955
• PP (polypropylene) in 1955
• Today,
– PP dominates geotextile production
– PET dominates high strength, low creep reinforcement geotextile
production
– PVC and PE dominates geomembrane production

TenCate Geosynthetics Asia Quality System

The importance of accreditation

• Test Data are Reliable because :

• All test methods are according to International Standards (ISO/ASTM) ,

start from sample preparation until final reporting format

• Test apparatus capable to meet Accuracy or Requirements of

International Standards

• Testing apparatus are well maintained, calibrated and traceable to

International or National Measurement Standards

• Testing personnel are qualified, competence and perform their daily

operations according to systematic Standard Operating Procedure

• Periodical audit by 3rd Party Independent auditors

• Yearly Proficiency Test (Inter-lab testing) -> ensure testing variation is in

acceptable range (<2 standard deviation among all accredited lab)

• For manufacturer, the in-house product quality is Assured as Quality

test is done by the accredited laboratory.

Background of the GAI-LAP

• The Geosynthetic Accreditation Institute-Laboratory Accreditation Program (GAI-LAP)

• GAI-LAP clearly understands the needs and requirements of geosynthetic industry
better than other accreditation bodies.
• GAI-LAP is under the auspices of The Geosynthetic Institute (GSI).
• GSI is a consortium of organizations that are interested in, and involved with
geosynthetics (71 members, 45% are international)

• Federal Agencies
• State Agencies
• Owner/Operators

GSI

• Resin Producers • Design Consultants

• Manufacturers • Test Labs
• Installers • QA Organizations

18

TenCate Geosynthetics Asia Quality System

Background of the Standards Malaysia

• Standards Malaysia is accredited by Department of Standards Malaysia

• Department of Standards Malaysia is a signatory of
• APLAC-MRA (Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Mutual Recognition
Agreement)

• ILAC-MRA (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation Mutual

Recognition Arrangement)

• These recognition mean the certificates & reports issued by testing taboratories
accredited by Standards Malaysia are recognized as equivalent & accepted by
others International Accreditation Bodies which are also APLAC-MRA & ILAC-
MRA signatories

37 signatories to APLAC-MRA 91 signatories to ILAC-MRA
