Summary
The Powerhouse pit lies in the Drainage path of flood water/runoff from near-by hillocks. The Report
deals with

(i) the calculation of the Powerhouse Sump sizes to retain the runoff during the rainfall
events and its disposal by the pumping network,
(ii) Powerhouse Sump related planning to store, &
(iii) dispose the Runoffs coming from the near-by catchments.

1 Planning of Sump Locations & Its Size

1.1 Catchment area Determination
The Pinnapuram surface power house is planned at the gorge of the west side and east
side hillock. During the rainfall events to trap the surface runoff generated from the
nearby catchments, five (5) sumps have been planned in the Powerhouse pit area at
different locations and elevations. To estimate the runoff contributing to each Sump,
contributing calcthment area planning has been done. The catchment area/boundary
contributing to each five (5) sump are marked in the drawing and shown below in Figure
1-1. The details of catchment area and Sump location (Elevation) are shown below in
Table 1-1. The details of the Sump sizes, locations and water/runoff disposing network
(pumping) are shown in the attached drawing as PLATES attached at the end of the report.

1.2 Rainfall Intensities calculation

Considering the critical location of the power house, the 100-year 24 hours point rainfall
of 240 mm (as per details received vide email dated 02.12.2020, Refer Annexure I) has
been considered for the drain design. Accordingly, the short duration rainfall intensities
for various time durations are calculated. Further, the rainfall intensities for the return
periods of 100, 50, 25 and 5 year are calculated from the 100 year return period 24 hour
rainfall i.e. 240 mm. The 100 yr return period 24 hour rainfall for the project location has
been taken from the report on “Flood Estimation Report for Krishna and Pennar Subzone-
3h)” by Central Water Commission, refer Annexure-I. The smaller return period 24 hour
rainfall i.e. for 50 yr RP and 25 yr RP has been calculated by Kothyari and Garde Method
by using 100yr RP rainfall value. The 5 year return period 24 hr rainfall value has been
taken from PMP Atlas for Isopluvial (Return period) map of the southern Peninsula, Part-
I, Prepared by Indian Meteirological Department. The 5yr return period 24hr rainfall value
has been given as 127.65 mm, Refer Table 1-2.

Furthermore the 24 hr return period rainfall value for 100yr, 50yr, 25yr, and 5yr has been
converted into one (1) hr rainfall value for the corresponding years.

Rainfall for smaller duration than one (1) hour is worked out using formula as shown in
IRC-SP-13:

F = Rainfall depth in T duration in mm

Considering the severity of the damage during the runoff from a rainfall event,
fifty (50) year return period rainfall intensity as 169.72 mm/hr has been

considered for the calculation of the runoff for five (5) minute duration (time of
concentration), refer Table 1-3.

1.3 Catchment Runoff Estimation

The runoff generated from the catchment has been calculated by using the formula given
below

Q=CIA

Where,

C = Coefficient of runoff

I = Rainfall Intensity

A = Catchment Area

Considering the impermiable cover at the power house pit, a runoff coefficient of 0.9 has
been considered for the estimation of runoff.

The computed runoffs from different catchments for a return period of 50yrs correspond
to 5 minute time of concentration have been presented below in Table 1-4.

1.4 Calculation of Size of the Sumps

Based on the runoff estimated (clause 1.3), the sump sizes have been calculated for 5
minute storage. The calculation for the size of the sumps has been shown below in Table
1-5. The location of the Sumps have been marked in the attached drawing as PLATES at
the end of the report.

After examining the Table 1-5, it is found that the storage capacity of the proposed Sumps
sizes are more than the total runoff volume generated in 5 minute duration. Hence, the
prosed sizes of the Sumps are adequate.

The storm water/runoff collected along the East Side power house ramp, from center of
the south side of powerhouse towards East and the storm water collected at Transformer
Hall at El. 328.3 will be collected into the Cooling Water Pit-2 of finished size 11.5 m(L) X
8.00 m(W) X 6.00 m(D), located at East corner of the Transformer hall. The cooling water
pit-2/Sump-4 will be used to collect the cooling water outlet from the machines (from
each Large Unit) & (from each Small Unit). The 50 Year return period storm water/runoff
of discharge of 0.71m3/s for five (5) minute duration (total runoff volume in 5
minutes=213m3) shall also be collected in the same pit, and pumped out to Tailpool as
shown in the drawing.

2 Planning to Pump Runoff Stored in Sumps

After planning to store the runoff in five (5) different Sumps proposed in different locations
of power house pit, the planning to dispose the runoff has been done by provision of
pumping arrangement at different Sumps.

Considering the location and elevation of the Sump and site conditions, the runoff volume
stored in Sump-1 is proposed to be disposed into pool maintained in upstream of flood
retention dam proposed in the WEST side, by the suitable pumping arrangement. The
flood retention dam is proposed to retain the surface runoff from the West side catchment
during the flood event.

The runoff stored in Sump-2 is proposed to be discharged in to tail Pool as per the site
conditions by the suitable pumping arrangenets.
The runoff stored in Sump-3 is proposed to be discharged in to pool maintained in
upstream of flood retention dam proposed in the WEST side, by the suitable pumping
arrangement.

Considering the location and elevation of the Sump-4/Cooling Water Pit-2, the combined
runoff volume and cooling water form the TG units stored in cooling watetr pit-2 is
proposed to be disposed in to Tail pool, by the suitable pumping arrangement.

The runoff stored in Sump-5 is proposed to be discharged in to tail Pool, with common
piping arrangement as used for Sump-2.

The network planning of the pumping of water/runoff stored in different Sums have been
shown in the attached drawings as PLATES, attached at the end of the report.
