A, an and the are articles.

We use ‘a’ before nouns that starts with a consonant.


名词的第一个字母如果是辅音,就用’a’.

Examples: A goat

A pen

If the noun phrase starts with a vowel letter, but begins with a consonant sound,
we use the article ‘a’.
如果名词的第一个字母是元音,可是发音是辅音,就用 ‘a’.

Example: A university

A European

We use ‘an’ before nouns that starts with vowels (a,e,i,o,u)


名词的第一个字母是元音就用 ‘an’.

Example: An orange

An Eskimo

The article ‘an’ is also used for nouns that begin with silent h
如果名词的第一个字母是静’h’的话,就用’an’,

Example: An hour

An honor

An honourable degree

‘The’ is an article that is used to before things that has only one in this world.
‘the’是用在世界上独一无二的东西。

Example: The sun

The moon

The earth

‘The’ is also used when we are specifically referring to a certain noun.

We also use ‘the’ to refer to geographical regions

Examples: The village

The beach

The countryside

Zero articles

No articles are used for nouns that refer to a concept in general.

Examples: Climate is one of the many factors that encourage alteration in farming
methods.
