Viet Nam has a rich culture spreading from an agricultural civilization. For this reason, most Vietnamese people are
very attached to their villages. The terms for “village” are different in different groups of people in Vietnam. It is lang
in Vietnamese language, chieng in Tay Thai, ban in Muong, and buon in the languages of several groups living in the
Central Highlands. The village is a highly interwoven social organization. It is not only an administrative
organization, but also an economic unit based on the areas of farmland owned by all of the villagers. Farmers living in
the same village are closely linked by community or business relations. Thus their habits, customs, religious practices
and festivals are based on deep-rooted traditions.
The village festivals and ceremonies, in their various forms, display Vietnam’s rich cultural traditions and historical
features. There are many popular regional and national festivals, through which inhabitants commemorate regional as
well as national heroes/ heroines. Wedding ceremonies and funerals have always been considered the most solemn
since they mark the two important events in one’s life. In engagement and wedding ceremonies, betel leaves and
areca nuts make the offerings more meaningful. In fact, in most villages in Vietnam, a cup of tea and a betel leaf with
a piece of areca nuts are symbols of friendship and other qualities such as faithfulness and honesty.
