TOURISM TODAY
People travel all over the world and visit a lot of interesting places. The effect of travelling
of a large amount of people sometimes is incredible. Here are some examples of it.
A large number of people coming to one place once at a time can have less comfortable
accommodation as it was in Scotland where only 40% of tourists were offered hotels.
Tourism is one of the principal contributions of pollution in the Mediterranean Sea and as the
number of people increases, the problem worsens. Several laws and initiatives have been
implemented in order to protect the Mediterranean Sea from further degradation. The rapid
tourism development of Bali has had a great effect on its natural environment, affecting water
resources, increasing pollution and localized flooding, as well as putting pressure on the
island’s infrastructure.
In Cancun, Mexico, tourism has extensively damaged the lagoon, obliterated sand dunes, led
to the extinction of varying species of animals and fish, and destroyed the rainforest which
surrounds the island. It was only twenty years after it was developed, that the government of
Mexico decided to limit projects along the coast to prevent further damage to the island’s
environment.
In Trinidad and Tobago, there are shortages of water due to the overpopulation of tourists on
the island. The most damaging effect of tourism has been the destruction of coral reefs, as
they are harvested for sale to tourists and destroyed by tourists stepping on them as they enter
the water.

1. What happens when a large number of visitors come to one place once at a time?

3. Read the passage. Decide if the following statements are true (T) or false (F).

Spacewalkers on the space shuttle Atlantis got to travel to outer space to help build the
space station and install some of the latest technology on their 2006 mission to the
International Space Station. The 2006 Atlantis mission to the space station marked the return
to construction of the space station after a delay of several years.
The delay had been called after the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. In the years
since 2003, Atlantis had been carefully checked and upgraded. Its return to space in 2006
revived hopes and plans for improvements to the space station.
The crew of Atlantis included Joe Tanner, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, Dan Burbank,
and Steve MacLean. These astronauts had to receive extensive training before their flight
because their spacewalks would be unusually complicated. Once at the space station, they
would perform three separate spacewalks in teams of two astronauts each. The purpose of the
spacewalks was to attach a large truss structure holding solar panels to the space station. On
Earth, the truss assembly weighed seventeen tons and made up a forty-five-foot-long
package. On September 9, the astronauts were ready. Atlantis was ready, too, and after a
delay of several days, the weather was right for a launch. At 11:15 A.M., Atlantis with its
crew of astronauts) blasted off for a twelve-day trip.

4. Read the passage.

Over a million people working in America’s fields, and far more globally, are about to
face competition from workers who never get tired or ask for a living wage.
As field robots have gotten cheaper, a steady stream of farm jobs are being automated.
Lettuce weeding is one of the first where the cost of robots now matches human labor.
Weeding lettuce is slow, expensive, and potentially dangerous due to chemical exposure.
Farm workers must spray individual weeds from a pesticide-filled backpack. Automated
systems like the one designed by Danish firm F. Poulsen Engineering replace this with
mechanical weeding and computer vision to distinguish between crops and pests. The
company says it can do the job much faster and at no extra cost.
Robots will likely make inroads fastest in areas where the labor is backbreaking, and peak
harvest times create a short supply of workers. Most robots have been built for specialized
tasks: grapevine pruners, lettuce thinners, strawberry picking and cow-milking robots. But
corn and other commodity crops are already taking advantage of economies of scale to get
ahead of the cost curve. Large corn farmers in the US are buying features like self-steering

8
tractors to save money. Even though the technology isn’t expected to reach price parity with
human labor until 2020 for most farmers, about 10% of US farmers have adopted the
technology because of its scale.

Fill in the blank with a suitable word/ phrase from the passage.
1. Weeding lettuce can do harm to farmers’ health because of ................................ .
2. The automated system designed by Danish doesn’t require................................ .
