Specific is when you zoom in and go into detail on exactly
what it is that you are planning on doing in the future. In my case, I know that I want to have a career in Business but to make this target become more specific, I would say that I would like to go into finance, accountancy.
Measurable is when you make sure that you have a clear
goal of what it is that you want to achieve. You are measuring to make sure that you reach your goal.
Achievable is when you are making sure that you will
actually be able to reach your goals. You need to make sure that what you have already doesn’t make your targets become impossible to reach.
Realistic is making sure that your goal is something that
you can actually do. For example, it wouldn’t be realistic for me to do a science based course at University after completing my BTEC, because I wouldn’t qualify for the course so it would not be realistic.
Timely is making sure to give yourself enough time to get
your targets done. You need to make sure that you are not giving yourself too little time to complete things.
2. What are your SMART targets for your career plan?
Explain how each of the are SMART.
I know that I want to have a career in Business but this
isn’t really that specific so to make it more specific, I would have to say that I want to go into finance as this is a huge part of business, and I want to go into accountancy.
Within the next 5 years, I want to have made sure that I
have achieved my degree in finance and got some experience too. This is measurable because I have a clear goal of what I want to achieve and making sure that I reach that goal.
It is achievable because lots of people that do the same
course as me go on to do finance degrees in University so it is achievable.
It is realistic because if i get distinctions in all my units
from now on then I will have enough UCAS to go to University and it’s realistic because I am determined to do this.
It is timely because it will only take 3 years to do a degree
and I have given myself a time goal of 5 years so I have more than enough time.
3. For each of your targets – when are you going to
review them and how?
I am going to review the specific target every few weeks
to make sure that I am still on track with the same thoughts. I am going to review measurable everyday to see if I am getting closer to my smaller goals. I am going to review achievable after a year to see if I am still in line with where I thought I would be in a year. I am going to review realistic after I complete a unit, to make sure that I still have enough UCAS and if it’s still realistic for me to go to University. Lastly, I am going to review Timely every year to make sure that I always have enough time to achieve my goals.
