Defining the 12th man

January 30, 2015 Volume 31 Issue 6

By: Azaria Keys

Staff Writer
If you have yet to hear the big news,
on Feb. 1, the Seattle Seahawks will play
in the 49th Super Bowl in Arizona and they
will be accompanied by the infamous 12th
man. This is an exciting time for many Se-
attleites and anyone else who wears that
blue and green with such vivacious pride.
As Pete Carroll, the head coach of the Se-
ahawks once told reporters after their win
against the Denver Broncos: “’Let’s not
forget all those people that follow us, the
12s. They’re something that’s so real, and
they’re so much a part of what we do.’” So
in honor of the upcoming Superbowl, let
us dive into what it truly means to be the
12th man.
“Some people are anti-Seahawks??
Shocking! They don’t know what they

Marcia Bennison, a finance manager at

when asked what she would say to those
people that are ‘anti-Seahawks’. Although
she was originally born in Illinois, Ben-
nison truly exemplifies the spirit of the

Human trafficking: slavery in modern times

By: Todd M Clayton Jr

The Black Box Theatre held a couple

The two that were attended were very in-

Student filmmaker hopes to strike it big at local festival

tival and National Film Festival for Tal-
ented Youth are coming up later this year
and one EdCC student is hoping that his
talents as a director are going to help him
break into the festivals with his powerful
film “Daughter.”
Daniel Bryant is a filmmaker on cam-
pus who is currently in the process of sub-
mitting his film to the Seattle International
Film Festival (SIFF) and the National Film
Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY).
His first film titled “Daughter” is a
view into the dark world of human traf-
ficking, featuring student actors from cam-
pus and a former student Anissa Amalia.
The film took four days to shoot and was
filmed here on campus, in Rainier Place
and other locations.
Daniel said that he wanted the film to
be “gritty and uncomfortable for the view-
er due to the darker topic of the film.” This
involved using different lenses and filters
that often made the actors feel the discom-
fort of the topic.
This included doing shots where he
had to try to stay quiet as he inched the
camera closer and closer to an actor’s face

Feminism and equality in the US

By: Danielle Taiclet
Staff Writer

In September of 2013, Feminist group

“Femen” took to streets all across Europe
topless, but not for the reason one might
think. These women marched to protest
their right to their body and to plead that
it not be sexualized by men; these women
sought respect and equality (Taylor).
It is not uncommon for any of us to see
a man mowing his lawn without his shirt
on and yet it is downright unacceptable for
a woman to do the same, let alone feed her
baby in public because her breasts are a
sexualized part of her body.
Femen marched to enforce women’s
rights to their own bodies so it not be
something women are ashamed of.
For those who are wondering what
feminism means, it’s definition is simply
put, “the advocacy of women’s rights on
the grounds of political, social and eco-
nomic equality to men.”
Feminism has been booming across
social media in the last few years, espe-
cially on twitter with the hashtag “yes all
women” in which women shared their ex-
periences with misogyny and sexism that
all women face.
On Youtube, a very popular youtuber
by the name of Laci Green has been ad-
vocating women’s rights endlessly, among
other things such as women used as sexual
objects (in commercials and magazine ads)
and consensual sex (a big problem regard-
ing rape).
Even celebrities such as Beyonce,

President ponders college tuition
By: Pearl Reid

At his 2015 State of the Union

Address, President Barack Obama an-
nounced a “bold, new plan” to motivate the
middle-class financially and educationally
by “lowering the cost of community col-
lege to zero.”
Obama pointed out that “forty
percent of our college students choose
community college,” and that this plan will
offer them a “chance to graduate ready for
the new economy, without a load of debt.”
He put some restrictions on it: “you’re got
to keep your grades up and graduate on
time.” It sounds, as he said, “bold.”
During the 2013-2014 school year,
11,000 students attended Edmonds Com-
munity College. The cost of tuition varied
from $1333 to $3078 for 15 credits.
While 64% of students financed their
own tuition payments, 36% already re-
ceived some type of financial aid. Running

Recycle, reuse and help save the planet one piece at a time

quarter in battle mode with the Recyclema-
nia tournament!
Recyclemania is an eight week com-
petition, from February 1st to March 28th,
among colleges and universities across
the United States and Canada to see who
achieves the highest rates of recycling on
a per capita basis, as well as which schools
have the best recycling rate as a percentage
of total waste and which schools generate
the least amount of combined trash and re-
cycling.
The goal is to motivate students and
staff to increase their recycling efforts,
generate attention and support for campus
recycling programs and encourage col-
leges to measure and benchmark recycling
activity in their effort to improve their pro-
grams over time…all through the spirit of
friendly competition!
Edcc is in its third year of competi-
tion in Recyclemania. Last year we came
in 93rd of 256, even beating out the presti-

Tired of normal sports? Try Paintball!

By: Ivana Schoop

While some people play soccer,

baseball, or some other popular ball sport,
some students choose something different
for their recreational fun. After all, not ev-
ery sport involves a ball.
About once a month, Will Skelton and
his friends get together to shoot at each
other. That’s right. Shoot. But instead of
lead, they use gelatin capsules with paint
inside – more commonly known as paint-
balls.
Paintball started in the early 70’s and
has risen to be one of the most popular
extreme sports behind skateboarding and
inline skating. Besides being a great stress
relief, a challenging game of Paintball can
be a pretty decent workout. Played both
competitively and for fun, with a variety of
rules and game types, Paintball has some-
thing for everyone.
The goal of the sport is relatively
simple – tag opponents out without get-
ting shot yourself. Skelton, a first year here
at EdCC, likens it to a video game, where

Watching Seahawks a family tradition

Valentine Night Strawberries

Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Ready In: 15 Minutes
Servings: 18
“Strawberries stuffed with lightly-sweetened cream cheese and walnuts are perfect
for that romantic evening. They go great with champagne! Pecans also work well in
this recipe.”

INGREDIENTS:
20 fresh strawberries
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese,
softened
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
1 1/2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar

DIRECTIONS:
1. Dice two strawberries and set aside. Cut the stems off of each of the re-
maining strawberries, forming a base for strawberries to stand on. Starting at the
pointed ends and cutting most of the way, but not completely through the stem end,
slice each strawberry into four wedges.
2. Beat the cream cheese until fluffy; stir in the diced strawberries, walnuts,
and powdered sugar. Spoon or pipe about a teaspoon of mix into each strawberry.
