The Gothards Sisters local queens of the Celtic music sound

By: Todd M Clayton Jr
Editor-in-Chief

The Gothard Sisters, if your a local

resident of Edmonds or a person who likes
to listen to Celtic music, then you know
these three talented young women.
If not they are a Local Celtic trio from
Edmonds, the trio is made up of three sis-
ters Greta, Willow, and Solana.
The young women enjoy perform-
ing music and dancing talents in front of
crowds large and small.
Keeping with that, they will be releas-
ing a new album “Splash” coming this
summer, and if its going to be anything like
there last albums “Splash” will be a big hit
amongst their fans.
They are very talented and their con-
certs have many entertaining elements in
them, such as Irish dancing fiddle playing,
guitar, Bodhran and singing.
There is nothing that the Gothard Sis-
ters can’t do when it comes to music and
entertaining audiences indoors or out side
in the fresh air.
The sisters just recently played at the
Shoreline Performance Center for their
yearly St. Patrick’s Day concert that took
place on Friday March 13, followed by a
concert on the 14th at St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church parish hall in Happner, Or. Then on
St.Patrick’s Day itself they will be playing
at the Craterion Theatre in Medford,Or. photo by Todd M Clayton Jr

Equal marriage being challenged in Arkansas
By Parmvir Rai
Staff Writer

The state legislature of Arkansas

recently passed a bill, SB 202, which
severely limits the amount of civil free-
doms granted to those of the lesbian-gay-
bisexual-transgender(LGBT) community.
The law, which is officially known as the
Intrastate Commerce Improvement Act,
restricts counties and cities within Arkan-
sas from passing nondiscrimination laws
which provide more expansive rights than
what the state government allows.
“I just don’t see why the state leg-
islature would pass such a bill. They are
basically saying that LGBT individuals can
be treated as second-class citizens in their
own country” said a student at Edmonds
Community College who chose to remain
anonymous. Upon learning that the Arkan-
sas state legislature was dominated by the
Republican party, the student said “it’s no
surprise. I feel that there are few outside
of the liberal community that support gay
rights. I guess I’m lucky I live in a state
that recognizes LGBT individuals as val-

Harve Bennett: producer of ‘Star Trek’ movies passes
By: Todd M Clayton Jr
Editor-in-Chief
Harve Bennett, who produced four
Star Trek movies, “The Mod Squad”, “The
Six Million Dollar Man”, and “The Bionic
Woman” died on Wednesday at the age of
84.
Bennett was the producer of Star
Trek’s classic “Wrath of Khan” and is re-
membered as one of heroes of science fic-
tion.
Bennett was born in Chicago, Illinois
and attended school in California, where
he graduated from UCLA’s film school.
In 1953, he joined the United States
Army, where he served in the Military Po-
lice Corps. He was honorably discharged
in 1955.
Bennett came to Star Trek when Para-
mount, dissatisfied with the franchise’s
first feature-length film, asked if he could
make a better movie and do it for less than
the $45 million that the first Star Trek mov-
ie had cost.
It was while watching the whole se-
ries that he found himself drawn to “Space
Seed” and the character of Khan Noonien
Singh.

New laws cause turmoil for LGBT+ rights

By Scott Spicer
Staff Writer
We here at EDCC are in one of the
most open and accepting places in the
entire universe. People from all walks of
life are able to live here, learn here, and
grow. One of the groups that finds refuge
here is the LGBTQIAA (or LGBT+, for
short) community. It isn’t exactly news
that this community has faced opposition,
but things seem to be changing. A flurry of
legislation targeting the LGBT+ commu-
nity has surfaced in the south-eastern U.S.
(where else?) and some of it has already
passed.
Arkansas has passed Bill called
SB202, a bill that prohibits local govern-
ments from passing their own non-dis-
crimination measures. This bill effectively
bans banning discrimination without the
entire state deciding on the new discrimi-
nation policies. As if this wasn’t confus-
ing enough already, the bill is backed by
republicans, and while an anti-LGBT+
stance is nothing new, historically republi-
cans have championed small-government.
This vexing arrangement isn’t even unique
to Arkansas, as Tennessee beat them to the
anti-anti-discrimination policies.
So how is this bill portrayed by

PC gaming is far superior then console gaming

With the recent release of next genera-

one. One group of gamers doesn’t really
care about the next generation consoles as
they already have the best hardware need-
ed for gaming.
PC gaming is a far better gaming ex-

At the end of the day a gaming PC is a su-

on both a console and PC, I can truly say
the experience of gaming on a PC is more
enjoyable and superior than a console.
Lets start by talking about the one
thing that scares console gamers from
switching to gaming PC and it is the cost.
As it is right now the XBOX ONE is going
for $349.99, the PlayStation for $399.99
and the Nintendo Wii U $299.99.

Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage

This Irish girl has a confession. Until yesterday, I had

never made corned beef and cabbage. I had never even
eaten corned beef and cabbage. I thought I’d try my hand
at this year because I came across a recipe for it using the
slow cooker. And since St. Patrick’s Day is less than a week
away, I’m going to share it with you because it turned out
pretty well. Of course, I have nothing to compare it to, but
my husband and I really liked it.

I didn’t have any luck finding an organic or grass-fed

brisket at the two stores I tried, so I went with a conven-
tional cut. My veggies were all organic, though. Here’s the
recipe, courtesy of The Irish Cook blog.

Ingredients
• Large, lean cut of brisket (mine was about 2.5
pounds)
• Savoy cabbage, 1 head cut into several pieces
• Potatoes, 6 or 7 large white
• Carrots, 5 or 6 large washed well since you are
not peeling (I peeled mine)
• White onions, 2 large or several boiling onions
• 1 teaspoon of onion powder
• 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
• 1 bay leaf, torn
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Cold water

Time estimates
Prep time: 15 min.
Cook time: 8-10 hrs
Total time: 8 hrs and 15 min

Directions
1. Put brisket in the bottom of the slow cooker
2. Place potatoes, carrots and onions on top of bris-
ket
3. Season with onion powder, garlic, bay leaf, salt
and pepper
4. Pour cold water to just below the top of vegeta-
bles
5. Cook on low for 8 hours
6. Place cabbage on the top of vegetables
7. Cook for another 2 hours

Yield: 1 brisket

My notes: It was very easy. The vegetables came out

tender and flavored by the meat. The meat was very tender
and flavorful. I will say that the cabbage kind of stunk the
house up, though.

March 17 (well, a traditional American-Irish meal, the
Irish actually used to use boiled bacon, not brisket) this
is a good recipe to use. Regardless of the day of the week,
using the slow cooker is an easy way to prepare this meal.
