CAREER GUIDANCE WEEK:

Tag a Career, Plan for the Future
BY: MARK JOHNLY DALIGDIG
Education is the most powerful weapon which we
can use to change the world. This is the main ingredient
towards gaining our desired profession, and being able to
choose our own career path entails a lot of sacrifices and
careful decisions. We must be decisive enough for the betterment of our
lives and make decisions that can positively shape our future. Let us
dream and to make those dreams a reality, we must take on life‟s chal-
lenges and trials. We must remember that they are not barriers to our
dreams. We should be positive thinkers and see them instead as opportu-
nities for learning and growth.
Catmon Integrated School gave its students a taste of how it is to
have a career. Teachers facilitated activities and events in such a way
that the students could know what professions would best suit them. The
biggest activity was the culmination of Career Guidance Week. It was
spearheaded with a parade where the students wore the uniforms of their

ENCAMPMENT:

Last October 14-16, Catmon Integrated School
held its School-level GSP and BSP encampment. The
activity started at 8:00 PM during the first night. The
campers were very excited and happy even though the
weather was not fine. Each camper was preparing tents
and making camp layouts. On the other hand, the boy
scouts got wet because of the rain during the camp mak-

though the weather was not fine and they felt as cold as
ice, they were still able to build their camp properly.

the time scarcity. Still, they performed their best. The
longest performance was by the Juniors, who were also
doing a role play entitled ‘Tikla ang Probinsyana’. It was
a great performance and they danced quite gracefully.
Finally, the last performers were the Senior Boys, who
prepared a role play and it was fantastic. Soon enough,
the campfire activity ended. When the campers got in

gave touching messages for their teachers and it was so
cute watching little children doing so.
Even when the program finished, the celebration
still went on. Teachers proceeded to designated rooms
where the different booths were held. There were four
booths offering various treats and niceties for our beloved
educators. Teachers were able to avail of freebies such as
free massage, free make-over, free pedicure and manicure
and lastly, free videoke. Watching the teachers fleeting

hit that day, for it was where the teachers enjoyed them-

Month Culmination went on that day, it was soon time
for the pageant called Lord and Lady Nutriment which
was held in our school stage. Each pair of representatives
from each grade level looked beautiful and handsome in
their formal wear. They all looked great and elegant in
what they wore. They wore costumes that depicted a cer-
tain vegetable or fruit that was assigned to them. Some
wore vegetable or fruit masks, others wore crowns, and
then there were also those who chose to wear sashes.
Definitely, I can say that what they wore was a product of
artistry. All of them looked great, but Quennie Euldan
and Ben Jaime Arnado was the pair who stood out among
the others as they were our Lord and Lady Nutriment
2016.
It was really a great culminating activity and it
was evident in that everyone enjoyed it a lot. With lots of
effort from the school staff and with the help of the stu-
dents we were able to make our Nutrition Month Culmi-
nation a great success. Nutrition Month may in fact be
largely celebrated in the month of July, yet its message
should be echoed all throughout the year, and even for
our entire lives. Let‟s bear in mind that we should take
great care of our health in order for us to enjoy life and
the beauty of the world. ■

AREA IX
ADVANCEMENT CAMP
BY: ALDIN ROTILLES

Last November 11 to 13, 2016, the Area IX

Advancement Camp was held at the Cat-
mon Seaside Park since the District of Cat-
mon served as the host municipality for
this year. Boy Scout Contingents from
other parts of Cebu came early in the morning and soon
after sub-camps sprung like mushrooms from the ground.
The troop leaders led their troops quickly and efficiently
and it wasn‟t long before everything was ready.
On the first day of the encampment, there was a
torch parade which signified the path that Boy Scouts have
to traverse in order to reach the trail towards change. The
opening ceremony was graced by DepEd officials and the
scouts from different districts were warmly welcomed. On
the next day, there were many highlights such as rally
games which taught us all about leadership, camaraderie
and strategies. On the third day, there were more activities
that challenged the wit, survival skills and quick-thinking
skills of the Boy Scouts who had come from all over Cebu.
We profoundly enjoyed the activities and the ambi-
ance of our venue by the sea. And as we headed for our re-
spective homes, we brought with us all the learnings from
the 3-day camp. The Area IX Advancement Camp also gave
us an avenue for showcasing our expertise in different fields
such as Public Speaking, Leadership, Painting, Skill Nur-
turing, Nature Trailing and so much more. By instilling
such learnings in our homes, schools and communities, I

DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR

BY: KENT JAY PEPITO
Last September 23, 2016 CIS served as the host school for this year‟s District Science Fair. It
was participated by various schools all over the Catmon District and all of them sent representatives
who engaged in a clash of minds, wits & ingenuity. The theme for this year‟s activity is: “Juan Science:
One Nation” which focused on the unity and positivity of the Catmonanon students that shall pave the
way for better scientific education, technological progression and industrial innovation of our nation.
The opening program started at 8 am which included the National Anthem, the Invocation given by Mrs.
Gecelie M. Muela, the Welcome Address uttered by Mrs. Teresita B. Monisit, and the Rationale of the
activity expounded by Mr. Ronelo G. Buton. There were also intermission numbers performed by the CIS Dance Troupe,
announcement of the different contest‟s schedules and venues given by Mrs. Maria Virly R. Paulin and the Official Decla-
ration of the Science Fair 2016 proclaimed by the school‟s District Supervisor, Dr. Omega M. Sol.
By 10 am, all of the concurrent competitions such as the Quiz Bowl, Quiz Bee, Poster Making and Slogan
Making Contests began in their respective venues except for the Jingle Contest. The contestants went neck and neck for
victory and some landed in 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place and other consolatory places. In disparate instances, whether win
or lose, participants had two choices: claim victory or accept defeat. They also got a chance to draw lessons rather than
rejections. As a result, whatever befalls their aspirations and ambitions, they will be more confident, potent and opera-
tive.
Overall, the District Science Fair was a training ground for students who are involved in the extrapola-
tions of the behind the scenes of Science which shall ultimately be for the good of the school, our families and the country.

COOKERY SKILL COMPETITION IN THE TECHNOLYMPICS

BY: NAHAM P. BRELATA JR.
Last December 7, 2016, Catmon Integrated School sent delegates for the Cookery Skill Competi-
tion in the Division Level Technolympics at Horacio Franco Memorial National High School in Tabogan,
Cebu. Among the participants were Grade 10 and 11 Cookery and TLE students along with their coaches
namely Mrs. Erlinda Alducente, Mrs. Portia Cabanes, Mr. Giovanni Senadrin, Miss Kathleen Rose Flo-
res and Mrs. Joy Acuesta.
As one of the contestants for the Cookery Skill Competition, it was very nerve-wracking because
we had to compete against other contestants who had already gotten National Certificate II (NC-II). However, we are
proud of ourselves because we managed to become the fifth placer for the said competition. There were 17 municipalities
that participated in the Cookery Competition but only 5 schools were awarded and CIS amazingly got that honor.
We thank God for guiding us, and would likewise want to thank our supportive coaches and principal, and the
observers from CIS who cheered us on. While the cooking competition was going on, we were quite nervous but we de-
cided to concentrate on our tasks. I am truly proud to have brought honor to our school‟s name. Now, CIS can be recog-
nized not only in sports but in the Culinary field as well.
There were only five chosen winners. Fifth place went to our school, Catmon Integrated School. Fourth place
went to Asturias. Tabogon won third place. The municipality of Liloan bagged second place. And lastly, Minglanilla won
first place and will be the representative of the Division of Cebu for the Regional Technolympics.
We may not have won first place but we definitely did do our best. The experience has taught me that cooking is
not merely a skill you do at home in the kitchen. Cooking is a passion that one can develop and be proud of .■

KOOL ADVENTURE CAMP: An Unforgettable Experience

BY: CATHLEEN ANNE BONTUYAN

A chance to experience a leadership training camp away from stress and problems for three days
and two nights suddenly came along and it was indeed wonderful. RAFI or Ramon Aboitiz Foundation
Incorporated built the KAC (Kool Adventure Camp) in 1999. KAC is a leadership training camp. The
concept comes from Singapore so you could really expect that all the things inside the camp are Singa-
pore-inspired designs. They just moved to Cansomoroy, Balamban last 2012 so until now, they are still
improving the camp. RAFI made KAC in order to have a venue where schools can get training for their
school leaders since the youth is the hope of our nation. The preparation was tiring but it was all worth
it. In order to gain admission to KAC, SSG officers had to have medical examinations, seminars and even
present written consents from their parents.
The KAC was held over a span of three days, starting on February 15, 2017 and culminated on February 17. The
trip going there went well. Most of us couldn‟t sleep since we were all excited. We got there early unexpectedly. And then
our adventure in KAC began.
Our first day was all about introductions. We introduced ourselves using our chosen camp names to the rest of
the group and our instructor briefed us about all the safety measures we might need for the activities on the next day.
We prepared camp names, and we had to choose those names that we believed would best reflect who we are. KAC has
this rule of only using camp names during the whole duration of the camp in order to instill equality in all the partici-
pants. Young or old, teacher or student, instructor or participant – we all had to abide by this rule. We couldn‟t address
Ma‟am or Sir to the teachers accompanying us. Then, we were given a chance to explain why we picked the names that
we had chosen. Even our instructor explained why she picked “Footprint” as her camp name. She shared two reasons
with us. First off, she is a traveler. She loves to travel so much. Secondly, she said that she wants to leave a mark in eve-
ryone she meets along the journey called life. She also wants to leave a legacy in all the places she has already gone to
and the places she will be going to in the future. In KAC, I was called Dandelion or Dandy for short. I picked it as my
camp name although there‟s no special reason behind it. Most of my co-SSG officers are used to calling me Ate Cath, but
during the duration of our Kool Adventure Camp, I told them to call me Ate Dandy.
Then we had this detailed discussion about belaying since the safety of each and every participant was the
camp‟s top priority. What is belaying, you might ask. Well, it is a variety of techniques that climbers use to exert tension
on a climbing rope so that a falling climber does not fall very far. It was what helped us to keep safe during our Rope
Course Activity which was held the next day.
The second day was all about activities. But first, we studied the belay calls over and over again until we knew
them by heart. We started small with belaying by learning the basics. Our instructor Footprint made sure that we could
try out all the roles in belaying. After all of us had tried those roles, we moved on to the next challenge. It was what we
called the Pamper Pole Challenge. Upon seeing how high the pole is, you would immediately tell yourself that no, you
can‟t do it. But, Footprint told us that we should try our very best, and if we really can‟t do it, it would be okay as long as
we have tried our best to complete the given task. I am happy that I really was able to climb up to the very top. The next
challenge was the Net Climbing. Though, I haven‟t successfully finished it, at least I gave it my best shot.
The meals served were all quite good. The facilities were pretty great as well and those were able to accommo-
date all our needs. Everything there was so perfect that we are saddened by the announcement of our departure. The
third day was the departure day. We had many reflections on that day about our past activities. Finally, we packed our
things, cleaned our rooms and left. We had to go back to reality again.
Our life there was like a fantasy that we didn‟t want to leave just quite yet. Kool Adventure Camp really shaped
us as youth leaders. It helped us in improving ourselves. We really want to go back there and if given another chance, I
would grab it in a heartbeat. The ambience and view there was breathtaking and we always looked forward to our meal-
times for the food was just superb. The training was awesome and the instructors were very friendly. It would be great if
there would be a second time. KAC was the one of the most unforgettable adventures that has ever happened in my life.■

TEACHERS’ EVALUATION 10

BY: JIAH GACAYAN AND RAPHAEL ORION

The Teachers‟ Evaluation is an activity where school superiors are intended to examine specific
aspects of a teacher‟s performance to see if they pass the standard set by DepEd. Evaluation is not just
about passing the standards of higher-ups. It‟s also a great opportunity for teachers to prove that they
have the capability to educate students and can cater to the ever-growing needs of students in the school
setting.
On February 20 and 21, 2017, our school was examined by distinguished evaluators that visited
each classroom here in CIS. First was the School Principal of CSMNHS, Mr. Luis D. Papas, who evalu-
ated the classroom set-up, ground assignment and classroom furniture such as tables, cabinets and
chairs. The second assessor was Mr. Roy P. Jamero, who is the School Principal of TNHS. He examined
the Health Services Facilities like the Grooming Corner, Health & Nutrition Corner, Classroom Learn-
ing Resources, charts, posters, and Educational Corners like the mini library. The third evaluator was
the School Principal of CNHS, Mrs. Wilma Colonia who assessed the display and bulletin boards, as well
as the students‟ school records namely, the students‟ portfolios, school forms, gradesheets and more. And
the last evaluator was no other than our stunning and gorgeous principal, Mrs. Teresita Monisit, who
appraised the Management of Records like the Teacher‟s Action Plan, Daily Lesson plans, Summative Test Notebooks, as
well as the plus factors which include the Urban Gardening , Winning Coach and more.
Many people might be wondering why there is a need for Teachers‟ evaluation. In order to gather more insight,
we interviewed our principal. According to Ma‟am Monisit, the purpose of having a District Teacher‟s Evaluation is to
evaluate the school activities, learning outcomes, physical aspects and academic reports. She said that the primary pur-
pose of evaluating a teacher‟s performance is personal and professional growth that leads to improved performance. Fur-
thermore, evaluation is important to be able to enhance our school even more. According to her, we Filipinos are more
encouraged to strive and exert effort when we have visitors. She is absolutely right about that for the change in our class-
rooms and surroundings was very evident as the day of the Evaluation drew nearer and nearer.
Students had noted their teachers‟ reactions as initially nervous and pressed for time because there were too
many things to do. But after the evaluation, teachers were relieved and happy because they were very productive.
Unfortunately, this year‟s evaluation was a bit disappointing when it came to the physical aspects. Currently,
there is still on-going construction of classroom buildings and it was a bit of an eyesore. However, Mrs. Monisit said that
the paperwork of teachers, students‟ works, and beautification of classrooms were more than satisfactory.
All in all, we can say that the evaluation this year was a big success. Everybody‟s hard work paid off in the end
because teachers got very satisfactory ratings from their evaluators. Everyone has also showed their creativity by beauti-
fying their surroundings. Also, it was a great bonding experience as well for teachers and students for their students
gave them their all-out support by helping out with classroom structuring and decorations and by maintaining the
cleanliness of their surroundings. We can definitely say that through hard work, teamwork and effective time manage-
ment, anything is possible and success is absolutely attainable no matter how daunting the task may seem in the begin-
ning.
Cheers to our beloved teachers for doing such a great job! ■

Students were busy helping out their teachers in cleaning and decorating their classrooms days before the Evaluation day.

CATMON TEACHERS’ NITE

BY: RAPHAEL ORION AND JANECA MOLEJON
Last February 7, 2017 Catmon Public School Teachers celebrated their Teacher‟s Nite very joy-
fully and festively with the theme, “21 st Century Teachers: Grooving to the Chromatic Beats of The
World”. Before the main activity, they first started the program with religious activities namely the
aurora and novena which started at 4:30 in the morning and a holy mass that started at 5:30 am. And
then there was the main event, the dance presentations by teachers that everyone was looking forward
to. All were very excited, students were very supportive of their teachers and they went in droves to clap
and cheer for their beloved educators who rarely put on their dancing shoes. Catmonanons who live near
and far came as well and they were fascinated by the ravishing dance moves and the for sure expensive
attires and dresses that were worn by the different teachers coming from the different schools and de-
partments of the district of Catmon. It was quite obvious that the teachers have devoted a lot of time to
practice their different presentations that they have prepared. The presentations that they have showed
were very energetic and fabulous. Each school department showed different kinds of dances which origi-
nated from different countries. The energy was very palpable especially that the lively and animated
master of ceremonies was no other than Mr. Harris Arias.
First to take the dance floor were the administrators, headed by Dr. Omega M. Sol who represented the country
of Spain with an eye-popping dance. Next was the Catmon Integrated Elementary Department with their stunning Bra-
zilian dance. And then it was followed by the Catmon Integrated High School Department which represented the country
of Egypt with their spectacular and exotic dance. The next one was from the Catmondaan, Macaas, Duyan and Bongyas
Elementary Schools which represented the country of France with their admirable dance show. And then the Basak ES,
Binongkalan ES, Tabili ES, Anapog PS and Can-ibuang PS which presented a marvelous dance from the USA. Before
they proceeded to the next performer, Mr. Roseller Gelig, the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent gave a rousing
message. The teachers were delighted by his inspiring message as he gushed about how pleasantly surprised he was by
the teachers‟ dance acumen. Then after that, the Bagalnga ES and Agsuwao ES came and danced their hearts out with a

Hawaiian Dance. Next is the Ceferino Sususco Memorial National High School, Tinabyonan National High School, and
Catmon National High School who presented a dance from the country of Mexico which was both colorful and lively. The
next one is from the Cabungaan Elementary School, Bactas Elementary, and Panalipan Elementay School which repre-
sented India. Their beautiful Bollywood-worthy Indian dance was soon followed by the Cambangkaya Elementary School,
Ginabucan Elementary School, Amancion Elementary School, and Tinabyonan Elementary School which presented a
wonderful dance from the country of Argentina. Last but certainly not the least were the selected performers from Cat-
mon Integrated School, Elementary and Secondary teachers led by Dr. Omega M. Sol who represented our country, the
Philippines with their outstanding finale performance. Their dance presentation was very amazing with death-defying
stunts and sprightly dance moves.
On that night, the teachers from the district of Catmon showed us that they are not only capable of teaching and
inspiring students but also of performing very well in front of the masses. This proves that the public school teachers in
the district of Catmon are talented and versatile in any field. And we as their students really idolize and salute all of
them for their very stunning performances during the Catmon Teachers‟ Nite. ■

festival, only one team can be declared as the winner. However, no one went home without a prize. Every
contingent was successful in bagging awards. Tinabyonan National High School got the following
awards: 1st runner-up in Festival Queen Showdown, 2nd runner up in the Dance Ritual, 2nd runner-up
in Street Dancing and 3rd in the Overall Championship. Ceferino Sususco Memorial National High
School got awards such as 2nd runner-up in Festival Queen Showdown, 1st runner-up in Dance Ritual,
3rd runner-up in Street Dancing and 3rd in the Overall Championship. Meanwhile, Catmon National
High School got awards namely: Best in Street Dancing, Best in Costume, 3rd runner-up in the Festival
Queen Showdown, 3rd runner-up in Dance Ritual and 1st runner-up in the Overall Championship.
Lastly, the defending champion, Catmon Integrated School got most of the awards like Grand Champion
in Festival Queen of Budbod Kabog Festival 2017 which was portrayed by the beautiful young lady Ms.
Mae Chell Mirasol, 1st runner-up in Street dancing, Grand Champion in the Dance Ritual, and most
especially the most coveted award which was the Overall Grand Champion of the Budbod Kabog Festi-
val.
The CISians were very deserving winners and they said that they were not doing what they did just for getting
awards but they did it in order to show their devotion to their beloved patron saint in Catmon, Señor San Guillermo.
CONGRATULATIONS CISIANS for being the OVERALL GRAND CHAMPION in Budbod Kabog Festival for 4
consecutive years! We are so very proud of all of you! ■

Mr. & Ms. DepEd 2016. The said competition

were persistent, determined to win and bring
home the crown. But a competition will al-
ways be a competition in that only two can
take the crown and bring home the title “Mr.
& Ms. DepEd 2016.” As for the representa-
tives of Catmon, they may not have won but we are still
proud of them and their achievements. Kudos to them for
they still got major awards! Miss Niña Jean Armilla was

DANCING WITH
HIS HEART & SOUL
BY: ANGELIE
MONDANO &
ANGELY MAE
MONTECALVO
“Dance is not
just a sport, it is a
passion within a
soul.” That saying perfectly describes Jayson Pontillas,
whose passion brought a dance soul in Catmon Inte-
grated School by being the active 5-year President of
the CIS Dance Troupe in the High School Level.
Jason started his leadership of the dance
troupe in his freshman year in CIS. Now, he is a
Grade-11 Joy student under the advisory of Mrs. Joy
C. Acuesta and is currently taking up a TECH-VOC
Jason with his friends who are also dance troupe mem-
course specializing in Cookery. bers: Jemel Duran, Diolitmar Armian and Ranette Rule
Dancing was already a big part of his life since
he was 3 years old. With the inspiration and encour-
agement of his mother, he continued dancing and is hoping to get a scholarship in college where he plans to take up Ma-
rine Engineering. As the years passed by, he learned different types of dance by himself. He dances different genres such
as Hiphop, Pop Rock, Pop Jazz, Latin dance and so on. The types of dance he is challenging himself to master are Pop
Rock and Pop Jazz, while his favorite is Latin dance.
Jason can work alone, but also loves working with a group or a partner, depending on the chosen music. Some of
his favorite dancers are Matt Steffanina, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo and Gary Valenciano. He looks up to them because
they tailor-make their dance steps to the music and they dance with feelings and energy. That‟s exactly what Jason
wants others to see as well when he dances. Dance also inspires him to share his talent to help others especially children.
He hopes that the young dancers of CIS would follow his path.
“To those hoping to become a professional dancer like me, continue sharing your talent in dancing. If you can‟t
perform the steps perfectly, that‟s fine. Don‟t give up. Just keep on trying. That‟s the key to success, "Jason says.
Be a person with a passion that consumes your soul. Be the one who always dreams and follows the path that
you want to follow. Be a dancer. Be like Jason Pontillas. ■

MAE CHELL MIRASOL: DANCER

EXTRAORDINAIRE
BY: YANNIE LACE COLIS
In Catmon Integrated School, there‟s a girl
named Mae Chell Mirasol who has been chosen as
the Festival Queen to represent our school in the
recent 12th Budbud Kabog Festival Competition. She
is 16 years old, a grade 10 student from section Sua-
dela. She has a unique yet captivating beauty that
no one could resist. Her best asset is her bewitching
smile that would put you under her spell. One word that would best
describe her is GORGEOUS - that‟s exactly what she is. Mae Chell looking regal in her blue Festival Queen gown
But before winning the most coveted award which is
the Festival Queen 2017 title, she underwent a lot of difficulties, hardships, and challenges. Luckily for Mae Chell, her
family and friends motivated her to join the Festival Queen screening because they saw her potential to win. They kept
telling her to go for it, so feeling heartened by their encouragements, she decided to take the leap and joined the screen-
ing together with the other girls who also wanted to be the next Festival Queen. The results came quickly and her
prayers got answered as she got chosen to be the next Festival Queen to represent the school. She was happy, excited as
well as nervous. She had mixed emotions upon hearing that she had gotten her wish to represent CIS. Happy - because
she got chosen, excited- because she would represent the school and a little bit nervous for what was going to happen in
the competition.
Together with the props men and the CIS Budbod Kabog dancers, Mae Chell practiced her performance day in
and day out. Even during the initial stages of the practices, she always strove to do her best. She believes in the adage
“Practice makes perfect.” She never felt complacent and was always on her toes to please her trainers and choreogra-
phers. Whatever they told her to do; she did those without complaint for she believed in their expertise. While doing prac-
tices, there were times when she encountered problems like how sometimes she couldn‟t get some steps correctly – like
the right way to sway her hand and the proper way to smile. It was like she was having such a hard time about these in
the beginning. She even got scolded by the trainer multiple times because of these but all she did was smile and nod. She
never minded that they criticized her. She listened and took it as constructive criticism. Mae Chell told herself that she
should use it as a motivation to make her performance even better than it was. Aside from the troubles she had encoun-
tered during practices, she also had bashers - lots of them. If we describe what bashers are, they are the ones who have
nothing better to do with their time than to mind other people‟s businesses. Bashers are those who try to put you down
because they are insecure deep inside. Initially, it made her want to give up but her friends and family encouraged her to
continue. And so, she chose not to give up. Mae Chell wanted to show her bashers what she was capable of and she
wanted to prove them all wrong.
When it was her time to perform, she never felt any nervousness. For some reason unbeknownst to her,
confidence came over her and filled her with a sense of purpose. She just enjoyed herself and savored the moment al-
though her gown and back garments were so heavy. She told herself to think positive and danced to the beat all the while
16

believing in herself that she, Mae Chell Mirasol could do it. The best part of her performance was the time when she was
being lifted high up in the air. It was so outstanding that it gave a big impact to their performance.
Mae Chell never expected to win but she is very thankful and happy that she really made it. Her heartfelt
thanks goes out to all those who supported her and believed in her all throughout the competition. She says that her
gratitude to them can never be measured. Also to those who bashed her, she is also thankful to them because their nega-
tive criticism of her pushed her to do better. Despite their unkind words to her, she was able to find the courage to do her
best and show them who the true Mae Chell really is. For sure, great pressure shall fall on the shoulders of next year‟s
CIS Festival Queen because Mae Chell Mirasol has done a really wonderful job during this year‟s Budbod Kabog Festi-
val. One piece of advice that she can give the next Festival Queen is this: Don‟t mind the bashers. Just keep your head up
and believe in yourself.
Congratulations Mae Chell! You‟ve made your CIS Family very proud! ■

GUARD LITO: OUR WATCHFUL PROTECTOR

BY: LIRA PESONS
It is our right as children and young adults to be educated and morally cultivated in a place
where there are good educators. And that place is no other than here in school. But it is also our right to
stay in a place where we are comfortable and safe. Since school is our second home and it is where we
can meet new people with different personalities, our parents need an assurance that we are looked after
by competent persons. That‟s why most schools hire security guards.
What is a security guard by the way? A security guard is also known as a security officer or a
protective agent. He or she is a person who is hired to protect people from a variety of hazards. They are
the ones who make sure no harm befalls us and they risk their life and limb day by day in order to keep us safe and
sound. Now, one question. Have you ever wondered who our security guard is?
Well, he is no other than Mr. Manolito Bragat Te. You can call him Guard Lito or Kuya Guard and he is 44 years
old. He lives in San Jose, Catmon, Cebu and has two daughters and three sons. Sad to say, one of his sons has already
passed away and that has given him a lot of grief for he truly loves all his children. Guard Lito already has lots of work
experiences as a security guard. In the beginning of his career as a security officer, he worked in Davao City as a driver
escort. He then transferred here in Cebu as a driver escort for Metro Bank. See those armored cars that carry around lots
of cash? That‟s what Guard Lito used to do. He escorted money collectors while they carry big amounts of money. He pro-
vided security for them in order that bad elements wouldn‟t be tempted to steal the bank‟s money. Later on, Guard Lito
transferred to CEBECO where he worked as a money collector. He was also, at one time, assigned in the Alegre Beach
Resort as a security guard. Guard Lito said that he has tried all kinds of jobs and once, he even worked as a laborer who
used to collect sand and gravel. Then one day, he heard through word of mouth that the principal of CIS was hiring a
security guard for the students. Guard Lito thought that it was the perfect job for him because he is passionate about
working as a security officer and he also has a soft spot for children. He was hired immediately because he has a lot of
working experiences, trainings and he also has a security guard license. He
has been serving as a security guard for ten years already and has a spotless
record. Guard Lito says that he started working here in CIS on July 1, 2015.
He works 12 hours every day and has no day off. He has a salary of 8,000 pe-
sos but only gets to take home 6,000 pesos to his family at the end of the
month after common salary deductions like SSS and such. He says that it is
not really difficult for him to work here in CIS but in the beginning, he
needed to make an adjustment to the new environment.
When asked how he deals with troublemakers and those who skip
classes, Guard Lito laughed and said that kids will always be kids. Some-
times, he is very strict towards students but he wants them to know that he
is just doing his job by enforcing the school rules that would keep them safe
from harm. Guard Lito is an example of a hardworking man. Imagine not
having a day off all week yet he still maintains a cheerful demeanor and is
very quick to come to the aid of students and teachers alike. We must remem-
ber that he is here in school to protect us every day of his life. For sure, you
can see him in the guard house or near the school gate. He is the one who
helps the Barangay Tanod enforce traffic rules and helps students cross the
street. And for that, he deserves our respect. The next time you see him, try
giving him a smile or just say hi. Let‟s remember to thank him for doing such
a good job of securing our school premises and therefore giving us peace of
mind while we are here getting an education. ■

CEBU PROVINCIAL MEET 2016

BY: JOHN MICHAEL TAJOR & ROGIE MAR BELECINA
The Cebu Provincial Meet is always a time that students look forward to each year. It is a time
when we witness many sporting events and are able to showcase the talents of the students of Catmon
integrated School. This event was held at the Municipality of Carmen because it is the host municipality
for this year. The Provincial Meet officially kicked off last November 20, 2016. The excitement in the ath-
letes‟ eyes were undeniable, the strong flame of courage and determination were slowly lighting up their
emotions. The will to win was consuming their souls. There were many sporting events such as basket-
ball, volleyball, badminton, athletics, baseball, football, tennis, swimming and so on.
CIS was able to participate in some of these events like Sepak Takraw, Volleyball, Badminton,
Mr. & Ms. DepEd and many others. All of the student athletes really did try their best to bring home the
bacon. But, in every event, there has to be a winner and there has to be losers as well.
Thankfully, we were still able to win the championship in some key events. Among these win-
ners are the Volleyball team of the Elementary level headed by Coach Vilma Veloso and trained by her
son Mr. Zach Veloso. As well, the Badminton team was very happy to win the championship game. They
were led to victory under the tutelage of their coach Mr. Edward Paulin. Lastly, Catmon was able to bag the first runner-
up award for Miss DepEd 2016 as won by Niña Jean Armilla, a GJFS student and the Mr. Congeniality award was
brought home by Mr. Christian Jay Montejo, a CIS student. CIS is truly proud of the athletes‟ effort and dedication to
their craft. Of course, the pain of losing is always and will always be a part of sports. This is one valuable lesson that
sports give us, the lesson of good sportsmanship. This is the will to accept defeat and learn lessons from it. This is the
ability to brush yourself off after losing with a smile on your face. The CISian athletes did work so hard and they trained
for months on end just to win our school the gold medals that everyone covets. Although not all of them won in their cho-
sen sporting events, the CISian athletes are still optimistic and many of them have expressed their desire to try harder
again next year. As the saying goes, NEVER RETREAT, NEVER SURRENDER! And so together, we are going to strive
harder to achieve victory in the next Provincial Meet! ■

SEPAK TAKRAW GIRLS

BY: ANNA CLARISSE ROBLE & ROSELITO ILLUSTRISIMO
In Catmon Integrated School, there are three popular athletes in Sepak Takraw Secondary Girls
Division namely Lhaina Lheill Mangubat, Jean Marie Sucalit Maray and Fria Ethyll Areja. They are the
best female athletes here in our campus when it comes to Sepak Takraw. Recently, they were drafted as
part of the Philippine Team (RP Team) after one sport scout noticed their incredible skill in playing
Sepak Takraw during one fateful game in Dipolog
City. The sport scout was so impressed with their
skills that they were offered a full scholarship!
Soon, they will be transferring to a school in Ma-
nila where they will be continuing their studies
and playing Sepak Takraw for the Philippine
Team. We interviewed them except for Fria (who
was unfortunately not available at that time)
about their lives, what it‟s like being an athlete
and also a little bit about their love lives.
A.R : Why do you love playing Sepak Takraw?
Lhaina : My cousin is a volleyball player and she got a scholarship

ing about her good fortune. But for me, it is Sepak Takraw that I
love.

me in the future.

wanted to give up. He would get angry and disappointed with
me and I had to try my best not to repeat those mistakes. I just
kept on reminding myself not to give up on my dreams during
those times.
Maray: Me too. I also experienced the exact same thing.
A.R: How do you feel about being part of the RP Team soon?
Lhaina: I feel very happy and thankful at the same time.
Maray: It‟s really a great feeling that we could make our par-

CIS ELEMENTARY GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM:

THE PRIDE OF CATMON & CEBU PROVINCE
BY: IVY COLOLOT AND CLINT HARPY DENSING
The Catmon Integrated School Elementary Volleyball Girls Team has done it again! Right after
being hailed as the champions of the Cebu Provincial Meet 2016, this strong band of girl warriors have
conquered the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association or what we most commonly know as the
CVIRAA. They are the CVIRAA‟s champions in the Elementary Girl‟s Volleyball Event. And after grab-
bing the gold medal once again this year, they proved to one and all that they are still an unbeatable
team. They are the pride of Catmonanons and are the ones who bring glory to the name of Cebu Prov-
ince. They have been called the Catmon Volleybelles by admiring coaches and players after they showed
their prowess in this sport. It is such an honor that Catmon Integrated School has this kind of team
which always brings their best to every volleyball game that they play or compete in. Mrs. Vilma Veloso,
the team‟s supportive and proud coach says that her team always aims to bring home the bacon. Her
team continually sets the bar high for they believe in excellence earned through hard work.
Now, let‟s get to know who these amazing girls are that make up such a great team. First off,
there‟s their team captain named Hazel Basarte, who always plays a great role in unifying their team.
Then there‟s Chantelle M. Silvestre and Iamae P. Arnaiz who are the two energetic setters of the team. The other team
members are Angelica Faith Salvador, Venice Mae Campano, Casiey Monique Dongallo, Francis Mae Flores, IC Cepada,
Kerty Suday and Jacqueline Dorog. There is a total of ten players in their team but they chose to pick two great players
who come from Bantayan and Dalaguete to join their team for they had shown great skill during the Provincial Meet.
Right after the Cebu Provincial Meet last November, the girls spent the next two months rigorously training for
the CVIRAA which officially kicked off last February 12, 2017. They told of how they would always go home late since
their coach Ma‟am Veloso and their trainer, Mr. Zach Veloso, demanded that they be in top shape and performance. So,
they practiced day in and day out in order to perfect their moves. They also underwent medical check-ups and screenings
before they could get the privilege of playing in the CVIRAA. On February 5, 2017, the team left Catmon and was bound
for their billeting quarters in Minglanilla. There, they had no time to relax at all. They were back in the volleyball court
in no time honing their skills.
On the 12th of February, the first day of the CVIRAA, the Volleybelles were eager yet nervous at the same time.
They participated in a parade for the CVIRAA kickoff and then the games started. The girls grew increasingly anxious
for their first game. One of the reasons why they were nervous was they felt the gravity of their situation. If they lost,
they would be letting down the whole of Cebu Province. There was that constant burden of expectations of those who be-
lieve in them. For how many years already, they have felt pressured to always win and when they sometimes lost, their
grief was so strong. This time, their coach told them to just relax and stay focused and so they promised themselves that
they would just enjoy each game as it came along.
Their first opponent was the Lapu-Lapu team, followed by the Talisay team and the subsequent one was the
Naga team. All three teams were really quite good and challenging to beat but the game that they were most anxious and
most pressured about was the one wherein they were competing against the Cebu City Volleyball Team. That team was
just such a solid and skilled group and they had a strong offense and defense strategy as well. The Catmon Volleybelles
said that it was really difficult for them to beat Team Cebu City but amazingly, they still managed to do it! That game
pushed them towards the finals where they competed against Team Mandaue. During the finals, they were really intimi-
dated by their challengers because they were bigger and seemed stronger than the relatively smaller and petite volleyball
players from Catmon. Still, they didn‟t give up and tried their very best in beating the Mandaue Volleyball Team.
The Catmon Volleybelles said that they never really expected to win as Champion as it was such a close fight
against the Mandaue Team. Their scores were really close and the members of the audience really held their breaths
during the last few moments of their championship game. Also surprisingly, they gained great friends from their rival
teams. They might have been competing against each other but that at the end of the day, they realized that they were
all children who need and want friends too.
The CIS Elementary Girl‟s Volleyball Team is the epitome of a great and strong team. The girls said that they
not just played volleyball but they also learned valuable lessons during the CVIRAA. They learned how to value team-
work, good sportsmanship and how important it is to think positive. They also said that no matter how much they have
achieved already, they know the importance of staying humble. They are very thankful that they have won the champi-
onship and have given pride to Cebu Province. It would have been such a big loss if they had lost to Team Mandaue.
Becoming the champion is the happiest moment for any team. But before a team could get to the top, they have
to go through many hardships and challenges. But despite adversities, it is indeed important to not stop being motivated.
We are the ones who can make ourselves strong. We are the ones who know ourselves best and whatever weaknesses we
may have, we can always choose to turn those into strengths. ■

TREASURES JUST FRIENDS

By: Sharone Pepito Guinita, Faculty By: Roselito Illustrisimo
Gold and diamonds are not treasures for me,
They are just material things that mere eyes can see. It is very hurtful to notice,
They sparkle, they glitter in the midst of the darkest night, That we are only friends.
But they are objects temporary for the sight. A while ago, I finally realized,
That it is enough for me.
Gold and diamonds are belongings too,
But belongings that do not belong to you. At least, you gave it all to me.
They might be for you, for others or for me, You brought me sunshine,
Nobody can tell because in life they do not stay. When all I saw was rain.
You brought me laughter,

Just like a dove,
If I had known it would be the last time, Let it fly on above.
That I‟d see you fall asleep.
I would have tucked you in more tightly, Sickness and weakness,
And prayed the Lord, your soul to keep. Humanity or willingness.
With trust and forgiveness,
If I had known it would be the last time, Lots of joy and happiness.
That I would see you walk out the door.
I would have given you a hug and a kiss. Sometimes it‟s hard,
And would have called you back for one more. Love can become marred.
Not to be rude nor wayward,
If I had known it would be the last time, My determination sometimes wavered.
That I‟d hear your voice lifted up in praise.
I would have video-taped each action and word, Some people say there‟s no forever,
So I could play them back day after day. Opposites would not be clever.
But a love so sweet and tender
If I had known it would be the last time, Makes you want to live happily together.
I should have spared an extra time and minute
To stop and say “I Love You”

SECRETLY LOVING
By: Niña Jessica Alonzo You may see me as an evil foe,
So ugly from head to toe.
While I was roaming around, I may be wearing things so dark,
I saw you on the ground. But I do have a golden heart.
Lying there all alone,
Just staring at your phone. Known for magic potions and trickery,
But, I won‟t do it for your misery.
Couldn‟t help myself from feeling sad, I can‟t blame you if you judge me,
Just watching you that bad. Let me tell you, I‟m just trying to be friendly.
I just want to make you happy,
Even if you‟re always grumpy. Everyone knows us for being mischievous,
But spare me, oh please! I‟m different from my blood-
I want to make you smile, line.
Even once in a while. I was never perilous,
But even if I try, Trust me, I would be fine.
I can‟t help but cry.
I‟m not a fairy godmother with her sparkly wand,
In the distance, I hide, Or a genie in his magic lamp.
As I want you by my side. Just let me be your friend witch,
Striving not to let you know, And trust me, you I would never ditch.
That I truly love you so.

Dear Noy Tisoy,

Noy, how can I be a better daughter?
‘Coz I don’t know if it’s me who is at fault or if

sultii daw ko asa ko dapat moadto…sa wala?

Please tell me where I should go.

To the left where nothing is right? Or to the right where nothing is left?

sa usa ka relasyon, naa ray duha ka importanteng butang.

mao na ang gugma ug pagsalig.
kung maguba na gali na, lisod na kaayong ibalik.

In a relationship, there are only two important things: Love and Trust.
Once those things are ruined, they are really difficult to get back.

‘wag mo ‘kong ikumpara sa ex mo.

dahil kung mas okay siya kesa sa akin, eh di sana kayo pa rin hanggang ngayon!

Don’t compare me to your ex.

‘Coz if he were better than me, you two should still be together until now!

may forever man o wala, kung marunong kang magtiyaga,

tatagal ang mga bagay na ayaw mong mawala.

Whether there is forever or not, if you know how to exert effort,

the things that you don’t want to lose will never be gone.

ayaw suwaye nga mahigugma ka’g lain samtang naa pakay hinigugma.
kay maski moderno na ang panahon karon, uso gihapon ang karma!

Don’t try to love someone else while you still have a significant other.
‘Coz even though we already live in the modern world, karma still exists!

sabi nila madalas daw masaktan ang mababait.

tanong ko lang...ganun ba ‘ko kabait para saktan ng paulit-ulit?

They say that those who are kind usually get hurt.
I wanna ask...Am I that kind that I have to get hurt over and over again?

ang pag-ibig ay parang sigarilyo. bakit pa naimbento, kung sakit lang ang epekto?

Love is like a cigarette. Why was it invented if all it does is hurt you?

sa Jollibee…
"isang large fries."
“ sir, 10 minutes pa po. Willing to wait po?"
“ okay lang, sanay naman akong maghintay."

At Jollibee…
"One large fries, please."
"Sir, it will take 10 minutes before it's cooked. Are you willing to wait?"
"That's fine. I'm used to waiting."

ang pinakamasakit na goodbye ay ‘yung hindi pa naririnig ng tenga mo,

pero nararamdaman na ng puso mo.

The most painful GOODBYE is the one which you haven’t heard yet
but you’ve already felt it in your heart.

The CIS Vanguard is the first school newspaper of Catmon Integrated School. It will be distributed every year to the
students of CIS. The CIS Vanguard serves as an instrument for friendship and camaraderie among students and our mission is
to empower the youth by providing them with a common platform where they can showcase their journalistic skills as well as
share their thoughts on current issues that affect them.

Many people in CIS have wondered what the word 'vanguard' means. Vanguard is defined as a group of people leading
the way in new development or ideas. The CIS Vanguard hopes to be the voice of the ordinary CIS student and aims to help lead
the way for a more informed student body. Thus, our paper features CIS news stories, student editorial, opinion, feature stories
about student life, advice column, hugot lines, sports, trends, entertainment, arts, and literature contributed by students and
some members of the academe. The CIS Vanguard is made up of journalists coming from the junior high school and senior high
school levels of Catmon Integrated School headed by its adviser Mrs. Alfecca "Pinky" Obnimaga.

The CIS Vanguard was a vision that became reality through the support of our beloved Principal Madam Teresita B.
Monisit and our active District Supervisor Dr. Omega M. Sol.

We invite students and the faculty to send us their contributions through our Facebook page
www.facebook.com/cisvanguard or by emailing us at cisvanguard@gmail.com. We also have a drop box which can be
found outside the Grade 11 Section Love classroom. You may submit your stories, poems, jokes, drawings and whatnot through
the drop box. Also, our website is up and running! Though it is still a work in progress, you may already read a PDF copy of this
newspaper issue through our website www.cisvanguard.wordpress.com or download it through this link:
