the night but also organized the whole event. The night has

Gail Anderson and Adrian Culshaw did a lot of background

work. Gail organized all the raffle prizes donated by Rac-
ing Victoria as well as two tickets to Oaks day which Adri-
an professionally auctioned off for $400. Adrian also han-
dled all the attendance variations with his usual calm effi-
ciency. The Racing Victoria also gave us the Subzero
CDs and the Horse biscuits were donated by Jackie
Noonan from Mt. Wycheproof Racing Club and made by
Bakery on Broadway, Wycheproof. Gail also donated a
special bottle of wine to thank Giles Thompson for being
our guest speaker. On the night our Raffle and auction
collected $838.
Joe McGrath from Racing Victoria gave us some insights
into the history of the actual golden cup itself and Giles
followed up with a great presentation on the Victorian Rac-
ing Industry and the Spring Carnival.
I need a volunteer to go to the Foundation seminar on Fri-

The Council have unfortunately cancelled the joint meet-
ing, on 22 October, with the Bayside Rotary clubs. They
are looking to have another meeting early next year.
This week we are at VGC and our guest speaker is Roy

Growing up in the picturesque rural county of

Norfolk in the UK, Racing Victoria CEO Giles
Thompson had an affinity for horse racing from
an early age. His stepfather worked as the
course doctor at the local venue in Fakenham,
and he has vivid memories of his early days
there, the “community feel generated at the
track”, and the “sheer intensity and challenge”
of the big-ticket races.
This passion only grew when he worked as an
executive at betting exchange Betfair, including
three years as CEO. “It deepened my love of
the sport,” Giles says. “We were very racing-
focused, we sponsored many meetings, tracks
