ROTARY CLUB OF BEAUMARIS WEEKLY BULLETIN

Number 24, 9 December 2013

Presidents Report
Twas a dark and stormy day. The predicted rain, hail and thunderstorms were omnipresent. How can we play golf in these conditions? was the popular cry. But right on time, the clouds dissipated, the sun shone, the blue sky replaced the dark and gloomy overcast and the greens and fairways of Woodlands Golf Club glistened. Twenty six members and partners were rewarded with a magnificent evening and teed off on time at 5.30 on Wednesday in excellent conditions and joined a large group of Woodlands members for their Christmas Nine and Dine. Following the golf an additional six members joined all the golfers in the main dining room for a magnificent meal and the inevitable presentations to the winners. Woodlands did a great job and really got into the Christmas spirit, fancy dress, plenty of prizes (for their members) and lots of laughs. A very enjoyable time was had by all. Woodlands also donated two bottles of wine for the winners of the RCOB group to go with the Calloway and Titleist golf balls. The top performers were: Ladies winner: Di Hone Mens Winner: Geoff Abbott Ladies Runner-Up: Rewa Jones Mens Runner-Up: Tony Phillips Woodlands is the first event in the RCOB Summer Cup. The trophies for the Summer Cup winners will be those with the best aggregate score over four nine hole games. Yarra Yarra, Kingswood and Victoria are planned as the next three venues.

Following the magnificent weather turned on for the golf, the next day was the coldest December day for seven years and thoughts immediately turned to the Concourse Festival. Would this rotten weather persist? Would all the work by Kerrie and her team be washed away? Would it be the first claim on the Clubs insurance policy for a cancelled event? But again, we were blessed with a magnificent Friday afternoon and Kerries hard work and organisational skills were evident. From traffic management to car parking in the primary school, selling tickets for rides, raffle tickets or jewellery,

queue management at the animal farm or Santa, it seemed that everywhere and anywhere around the Concourse there was an RCOB member or partner in a bright yellow volunteer safety vest. It was an excellent effort by Kerrie and her team and all the members and partners who contributed. Anecdotally, it appeared that more traders took advantage of the festival and were more involved than in the past and apparently there was only one complaining trader. It was debatable whether there were more people this year however the bad weather of the previous day may have impacted on numbers. Those that were there all seemed to have a great time and the kids certainly enjoyed the wide variety of rides and activities. The post event review will be important to identify whether it is something we should be involved with in future, how to continuously improve it as a major event on our calendar if we do stay involved and where we can improve the return for both the traders and RCOB. Again, thank you Kerrie and all those that helped make it a success. The Board were advised on Monday night that amendments requested by RCOB to the agreement with Sandybeach were agreed to by the Sandybeach Board and as a result the Club will be making a donation toward the purchase of a new bus. Our donation entitles RCOB to: have a logo displayed on the side of the bus be acknowledged in the bi-annual Course and Event guide which has a print run of 68,000 be represented in posters and information at the Centre be acknowledged in their Annual Report and at their Annual General Meeting Sandybeach is a significant Community centre in our area and a long term relationship with them should provide substantial benefits and opportunities to both parties. We are back at VGC on Thursday for the first meeting for some time. It is designated as a Club Forum focusing on membership but it is also an opportunity for members to raise any other matters of interest or concern. See you there,

Thank You From Sandy Beach Community Centre

Hi David, Lyn, Kerrie and Bob, On behalf of Sandybeach Community Centre I would like to thank you Friday night. The clients really enjoyed it. I also wanted to let you know that Kerrie (OBrien), our REACH department co-ordinator, (Recreational and Educational Activities catering for the Homebound), kept saying to me how she was blown away by the hospitality you gave us. Thanks and regards Kathy Armchair Travel Co-ordinator Sandybeach Community Centre.

Photograph by Justin Guariglia, National Geographic The symmetry of this lovely photograph is interrupted and made memorable by the red umbrella and its reflection in the pond. The strength of the red in this scene balances the dominant deep greens and cool colors and is quietly echoed by a gray umbrella in the upper left corner. Annie Griffiths
