ROTARY CLUB OF BEAUMARIS WEEKLY BULLETIN Number 37 13 April 2020

President’s Message Next Meetings

Since our last edition of IN GEAR the Club has, as usual risen to the THURSDAY 16 APRIL
challenge, and is now functioning in Cyber space. It has been a
great effort from a lot of people but David Lea and Greg Every LAUNCHING FIRST ONLINE FELLOWSHIP MEETING.
should be singled out for special mention as should our Secretary, 6.50 FOR 7.00
Trish Smyth, who is keeping the wheels of the Club going. MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW

At our second ZOOM meeting we were all shocked and saddened to

hear from John Sime about the terrible accident that Stuart and
Elaine Sime had when they were struck by a falling branch which
contained a beehive. John’s brother has finally returned home from
hospital, but Elaine died from the injuries she received complicated
by many bee stings. The whole event is beyond belief. Such a loss
is always difficult to cope with but even more so when we are con-
fined to our homes. Our Thoughts and deepest sympathy go to
John and his family.
It was great to have DG Shia with us for the first part of our meeting.
The 42 members at our second ZOOM meeting at 6.00 pm seemed
to indicate that this time was a suitable one. See screen shot on
page two.
Liz Tanzimat was our first ZOOM guest speaker and what a great
job she did in what I know are quite difficult conditions for the speak-
er. On ZOOM you are cut off from your audience, so it is like being
a radio announcer speaking into the void but with some power point
slides. None of this put Liz off who gave us a great new member
talk, so we now understand her background. Hopefully we will have
some more new member talks in the weeks ahead.
I have spoken with Gail Anderson our Programme Administrator and
she is putting in place suitable ZOOM guest speakers.
We have an important Board tonight where we come to grips with
the implications of the Lock Down and how we can deal with the
impact it is having on our club and community. Generally you can find out more about our upcoming

This week’s ZOOM meeting at 6.00 pm is a fellowship one. Richard

Clem Quick: 50 Years in Rotary celebrated. Clem was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow
with two sapphires, by District Governor Roseann Kava, to
recognise his service.
The club obviously highly values Clem, and his drive and
determination in getting events and projects up and run-
ning. Clem's contributions : President in 79-80, the Scrap
Iron Drive, the Group Study exchange to Brazil, the Ski
Spectacular and his dedication to the Brim Sports Centre;
were all remembered and applauded. There was a tactful
silence about the illegal colour TV raffle.
You know you're in a different Rotary area when one of
the Classifications talked about for entry was "Wool Class-
er". The genuine warmth and friendliness of this Club was
evident, as was the regard and appreciation in which Clem
Trish Smyth, Clem Quick and Jim O’Brien just after
is held by them. On the Club's behalf I was able to speak
