Introduction
ABOUT NATIONAL MUSEUM
The National Museum of the Philippines (Filipino: Pambansang Museo ng Pilipi-
nas) is an umbrella government organization that oversees a number
of national museums in the Philippines including ethnographic, anthropologi-
cal, archaeological and visual arts collections. Since 1998, the National Muse-
um has been the regulatory and enforcement agency of the Government of
the Philippines in the restoring and safeguarding of important cultural proper-
ties, sites, and reservations throughout the Philippines.

The National Museum operates the National Museum of Fine Arts, National Mu-
seum of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, and National Plan-
etarium, all located in the National Museum Complex in Manila. The institution
also operates branch museums throughout the country.

HISTORY
The first predecessor to today's National Museum was the Insular Museum of
Ethnology, Natural History, and Commerce under the Department of Public In-
struction, created in 1901 by the Philippine Commission. In 1903, the Museum
was subsequently transferred to the Department of Interior and renamed the
Bureau of Ethnological Survey. This new bureau was responsible for the Philip-
pine participation in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904. After the expo-
sition, it was abolished as a separate bureau and renamed the Philippine Mu-
seum.

The museum's structure again changed in 1933 when the Philippine Legisla-
ture divided the museum. The museum's Division of Fine Arts and History went
to the National Library. Its Division of Ethnology went to the Bureau of Science.
Finally its Division of Anthropology, which included archaeology, ethnography
and physical anthropology, and the other sections of natural history of the Bu-
reau of Science, were organized into a National History Museum Division. This
was transferred to the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture and Commerce in
1939.

OF FI NE ARTS
The National Museum of Fine Arts, formerly called the National Art Gallery, is
housed in the old Legislative Building. The building was originally intended as a
public library as proposed in Daniel Burnham's 1905 Plan for Manila. Designed
by Ralph Harrington Doane, the American consulting architect of the Bureau
of Public Works, and his assistant Antonio Toledo. Construction of the building
began in 1918 and completed in 1921.

“National museum of Fine Arts was our second destina-

tion.I'm sad because we don't have time also to travel
around the whole museum because of our behaviours in-
side.I'm amazed of what I saw inside because I can't imag-
ine how big was the SPOLIARIUM.” - Abug

“This is totally my favorite from all the museums. I was so glad

that I saw those kinds of paintings and sculptures because it
made me feel so happy and inspired. Hoping that someday
I'll be able to make an art like that and be a great artist in
the future. “ - Rumbaua

“There is a lot of things that I learned more from the different

artists from our country it was alsod one of my first dream to
see Juan Luna's Spollarium.” - Bernales

“Fine Arts is my second fave, because Painting and Sculp-

tures are near to my heart. It is refreshing to see different
kinds of Paintings and Sculpture.” - Bergonio

“This one is my favorite museum. The fact that "Alone Together" is filmed here
and the fact that the inside is much better than what I ex-
pected is so fun to look at. I'm also schcked by how big the
spoliarium is and how every art is presented in their own
way, with different kinds of art style; also how they ar-
ranged all the arts in one room with the same subject. The
sculptures are also unbelievable to look at. All the arts pre-
sented there is really fine and if I'm given a chance to cap-
ture a video inside, I'm really going to do it. “ - Alsisto

“The building is huge and its full of tourists and student like
me is visiting the national museum its really great because
the historical paintings and artworks are inside the building
that the youth must know and understand the message of
every artwork and youths must appreciate that kind of art-
works when i came the museum it was really amazing and
the fact that that most of its artwork are replica but there still 10% of art-

works and sculpture that stayed original “ - Morcillsa

“Ey this museum is one of the best for me. If you're interested
in sculptures stuffs paintings or dress design. Things in the
past. Well this is for you. But i dont think this one is for me. Im
more on colossals and fossils stuffs.” - Villanueva

“Visiting the national museum is really a great pleasure be-

cause not only visiting it with no purpose but visiting it with
pride and glory because the historical paintings and artworks
are inside the building that the youth must know and under-
stand the message of every artwork and youths must appre-
ciate that kind of artworks. National museum is a historical
building of the Philippine. I am glad that I had time visiting it because my
schedule is really tight. When I came in the museum it was really amazing and
the fact that most of its artworks are replica but there is still 10% of artworks and
sculpture that stayed original. The building is huge and it’s full of tourist and stu-
dents. Every painting in the national museum is well preserved and most paint-
ings have complete details and information. Well for some there is no artist or
“unknown artist” but the painting is in great condition. “ - Gesmundo

“National Museum of Anthropology was the first museum we
visited when we reached Manila.I'm amazed of the sculp-
ture and the historical paintings that posted inside the muse-
um.I'm glad that I visited one of the national museum here in
the Philippines.I saw the cultural and the old paintings by the
great artists. You also gonna see the cannons that used
when the war was started. The baybayin also and the kaban
ng lahi was in there.Actually,we don't finished our tour there
because we're running out of time and we need to move to the other two mu-
seums but I enjoyed the tour.” - Abug

“To be honest, I thought that museum would be boring be-

cause I'm not into those kinds of stuff but I actually enjoyed
every object I saw. I saw some things that I thought I will only
see in books, some sculptures that are very familiar, and
some cool objects our ancestors use before. I really learned
a lot from that museum and will surely come again. “ -
Rumbaua

“for me, it was the best museum because it really

shows how rich our country from fossils and minerals
and what impacts it made from our history and title. ”

“Since I’m not really a fan or Fossils, Bones and such. I earned
lot of new learnings from this museum, I get much awake
from whats the importance of Anthropology.” - Bergonio

“National Museum of Anthropology is such a wonderful museum and it's sur-

rounded by different things including those little things that
are needed to be kept. I like how it's bond together through
it's subject and how freely you can see all the exhibits around
the museum. Although it's quite unusual to start the tour from
the sides of the museum and how narrow it is to comfortably
walk around. But it's a great museum indeed as it shows arts
from three major islands of the Philippines. “ - Alsisto

“Actually I didn't like going to the museum when I first en-

tered the anthropology museum I was amazed because
here you can see how our country has evolved here you
can see the culture and history here you can see how peo-
ple have changed in our country and how people lived
then. “ - Morcilla

“I love going in the museum specially with my friends. It is fun

to look around and discovered new things in ur eyes. My fa-
vorite museum in the 3 museum in the luneta is museum of
the anthropology. First of all. There are fossils and bones eve-
ry where. Its actually not boring. Even the dead birds that is
new in my eye, insects, plants, they even got an old rice let
us say its a 200 yr old rice. And it is interesting because it has the fossil of lolong
which is the biggest alligator.” - Villanueva

“This museum has five floors of Filipino heritage. It’s quite

large, so it can take about 3 hours to fully appreciate every
attraction.Anthropology is the scientific study of humans and
human behavior and societies in the past and present. So
the National Museum of Anthropology covers a lot about
ancient and modern Filipino culture and lifestyles. We’ll be
sharing a lot of glimpses on what you can expect from in-
side. But we guarantee we’ll leave room for you to explore when you get
there yourself.“ - Gesmundo

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF

OF NATURAL H I STORY
It was recently announced that the third building of this museum complex —
the one presently occupied by the Department of Tourism, shall be developed
into the National Museum of Natural History, once the Department moves out
and transfers to its permanent location in Makati. The National Museum of Nat-
ural History will have a hexagonal DNA tower structure in its center which will
be the base for the ventilating roof-dome of the whole building. Living trees will
also be planted within the interior of the building. It was expected to be fin-
ished in the last quarter of 2015[6] but the opening of the museum was moved
sometime in 2017. In October 2017, the National Museum of Natural History offi-
cially opened to the public with its iconic Tree of Life structure.

“The last one is the National Museum of natural history.Even
though we're all tired on that day, we strive the whole muse-
um just to see how beautiful was in there. We saw the world's
largest crocodile in captivity named Lolong.I just found out
that the focus inside the museum was biodiversity.I'm glad
that we saw the preserved skeleton of the different kinds of
dinosaurs. ” - Abug

“That museum is really nice. The view is very fascinating es-

pecially seeing some skeletons of some species inside is real-
ly cool. We enjoyed every single museum we visited and to-
tally learned a lot from it.“ - Rumbaua

“When entering the museum and as you saw the skeletons

of some kind of dinosaurs it excites me so much. But I'm
somehow disappointed as it only focuses to Lolong the larg-
est crocodile in captivity. But all in all, it's a great museum
with great architecural design. “ - Alsisto

“I haven't been in a museum in a while and to put it bluntly.

I've never been to the National Museum since i was in kin-
dergarten where in i can't understand a thing. I realized that
the National Museum is divided into three buildings. Anthro-
pology, National History and the Fine Arts. I was excited to
see the National History because it is the one that is famous
for the "Tree of Life" which is the centerpiece of the said mu-
seum, unfortunately we were not able to see it a lot due to the lack of time but
i will definitely visit that one of these days. I dont want to discuss anymore what
ive seen inside because everybody who visited it knows about it. What i want
to discuss is how the message of how rich our culture is. There were so many
goosebumps moments when i was touring aroud the museum especially see-
ing the spolarium in person. I was absolutely amazed and mesmerized by it. I
hope that the National Museum was designed according to the time so it will
feel like just traveling back in time, maybe they want to put it together accord-
ing to pieces. After everything i saw i can only conclude that we might be a
third world country but our heritage and culture is undeniably rich and should
be seen and appreciated by all Filipinos. After everything I've seen, i cant help
but be prideful of how rich our culture is and we should celebrate it just how
like our neighborhood countries have preserved their cultures. It

13
surely is the key to the secrets of our past and certainly defines us as
a nation full of great treasures that can rival the best museums in
the world. “ - Hementera

kinda boring but i really am not in those kinds of stuffs. ” -
Villanueva

“Like the other two National Museums (National Museum of Fine Arts and Na-
tional Museum of Anthropology), the National Museum of Natural History is
housed in the former Department of Tourism building in Rizal Park near the
Agrifina Circle. All three museums are within walking distance to each other
making them easily accessible to the public. This somewhat
alludes to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC being
surrounded by important landmarks of the United States. In
retrospect, The Natural History Museum focuses on the biodi-
versity and ecosystem of the Philippines. The exhibits are
mostly taxidermied animals that are local to our country–
preserving the seemingly lost treasures. The usual suspects
such as the Philippine Eagle and a real life replica of Lolong,
the largest Saltwater Crocodile in captivity, can be found here. If you haven’t
been living under a rock the past few days, you might have already seen the
numerous photos of the “Tree of Life” in the middle of the main atrium. It’s basi-
cally an elevator which brings you up to the fifth floor, granting you an amaz-
ing bird’s-eye view of the museum. From there, you work your way down. “ -
Gesmundo
