ACTION RESEACH PROPOSAL

“SHORT STORIES TO IMPROVE READING LEVEL FOR

GRADE SIX
PUPILS IN MIASIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL”

S.Y. 2019-2020

I. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM

Reading is a perceptual process. As a teacher we are intimately

concerned with the readiness of individual for learning. If pupil cannot
read words, he or she encounters difficulty in his study. Many of our
school children lost their desire to read, maybe due to poor reading
abilities and difficulties.

A. This reseach aims to determine the cause of reading difficulties

and poor comprehension among grade six pupils of Miasin
Elementary School.
B. Specially, the study will answer the following:
1. What are the causes of poor reading abilities of our pupils in
grade six?
2. What are the common problems/deficiency involved in oral
reading?
3. What other factors cause/affect our pupils desire to read the
printed page or books?

4. What particular experiment has been conducted to find out the

causes of poor reading comprehension of our pupils?
II.ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM

 The researchers found out that the reading skills of pupils have
greatly deteriorated.
 The lost found desire to read because they cannot understand
what they read.
 They lack comprehension and could hardly sequence the details
of what they read.
 The result is an increasing their number of pupils inadequately
ready and unprepared for higher lesson.

III.HYPOTHESIS:

1. If the pupils devote their study to reading books instead of

playing online games, then will increase their reading skills
and develop good study habits.
2. If the parents share their time to assist and teach their
children at home and avoid the influence of movies,
television program, video games, computer games then
pupil’s desire to read will be increase.
3. If teacher in English will provide sufficient lessons in Phonics,
word recognition, sequencing noted details, pupils reading
difficulties and deficiencies in reading decrease and
overcome their defects.

IV.ACTION PLAN

1. Make a survey of the common reading deficiencies

encountered by pupils in reading orally and make possible
solution.
2. Make experimentation on the reading deficiencies noted and
give oral reading test to pupils.
3. Testing pupils comprehension and noting result for possible
solutions (40) item-test: Multiple choice (10), Matching Type
(10), Sequencing Details (5), True or False (5).
V.EVALUATION

 This program does not only benefit the pupils but also the
teacher because it fit the teacher in constant learning process
every day.
 The lessons being taught are no longer monotonous both the
teacher and pupils.
 The teacher will be exposed to different vocabulary each day
from all the sections she is handling. Thus, her vocabulary bank
continually improves.
 The teacher is also continuously challenged to modify a broad
grammar lesson to a simpler one which will enhance efficiency
level in teaching.
 This intervention program required no visual aids.
 It is applicable to any section at any year level.

VI.RECOMMENDATION:

This intervention program is subject to intensive review

and further study. I wish I could share this to my fellow teachers and
learn about their intervention program as well. Every
teacher, teaching in our municipality should be alarmed and
concerned not just accusing and pointing fingers to one another. We
must be open to any possible means and suggestions because in at
the end, when everything is considered, it is always teacher factor.
Empower ourselves and we can empower our pupils. Our pupils
mastery in reading affects all other subject areas that’s why it is
imperative for all teachers in Miasin Elementary School to keep our
best foot forward at all times and continuously so that we can figure
out how can we really help our beloved pupils.
