PASAY CITY NORTH HIGH SCHOOL – MAIN CAMPUS
Virginia Street, M. Dela Cruz, Pasay City
The remedial reading program is an initiative of the local government of Pasay City through
the Division of City Schools-Pasay City. The teacher of Grade 8 remedial reading classes, Ms.
Dayanara A. Empuerto, was assigned by the principal, Dr. Renato B. Mesada.
The program began in July 2018, when the English teacher of Grade 8 students, Mr. Edward
Joshua L. Castro, referred the following students to Ms. Empuerto:
Of the 16 students who received the letter, only six (6) students attended with their parents the
meeting on August 9, 2018. There were four (4) students who attended the sessions even though
their parents did not attend the meeting. They were Harry Paul Dorado, Patricia Kate Recto, Maria
Gianna Deveyra, and Jhana Alyssa Correa.
Thus, there are 10 students who may be considered official attendees of the program.
Official Attendees

to use several reading materials with comprehension questions written after.

Observations:
➢ Student Jessica Bitque only attended the first few sessions and dropped even when the
teacher talked to her brother who attended the meeting. She is the only one of the ten who
remained in the beginning.
➢ Student Patricia Kate Recto has a speaking disability but can otherwise recognize and
understand several words.
➢ Student Thomas Albert Sorrida is one of the students who frequently attend, thus he
developed from frustration to instructional.
➢ Student Jhana Alyssa Correa often falls asleep during sessions.
➢ The students in the independent are frequent attendees and have begun the program with
good comprehension levels already.
➢ The teacher found it difficult to make the students attend the sessions because they are
usually hungry already by the time the class begins at 12:00 noon. The teacher resolved
this issue by updating the parents but this method ceased to be effective as time passed by.
Recommendations:
The teacher thinks it would be better if the students are pulled out of classes instead of asking
them to attend off-session. If they will attend off-session, they should be provided food as it
makes it doubly hard to study on an empty stomach.
