Gravity and figure of the earth, spheroid and geoid, geoidal undulations, deflection of the
vertical, isostasy, local and regional compensation systems, isostatic anomalies, crustal
structures, Bouguer anomaly map of India and connection with known geological units.

Theory of seismic waves, propagation causes of earthquakes, global location, application

for estimating earth's structures. Prediction of earthquakes, seismic topography, and earthquakes
distribution in India causes.

Geomagnetism, transient and secular variation, dynamotheory, magnetosphere,

paleomagnetism, magnetic reversals, lithospheric movements, magnetic reversals, geomagnetic
and magnetotelluric depth sounding, interpretation procedures

Plate tectonics theory, morphology of plates, types of boundaries, processes and

corresponding geological and geophysical signatures, morphological and tectonic domains of
the ocean floor, mid ocean ridge system, sea floor spreading, hot spots.

General geological features of India, their characteristics, river basins, shields,

Gondawanas, Deccan trap, indo-gangetic plains, etc.

Origin, migration and entrapment of petroleum, properties of source and reservoir rocks,
distribution of oil fields in India, geophysical exploration. Offshore and onshore origin of coal,
coal fields of India, limitation of geophysical exploration.

Origin and occurrence of important ore deposits of iron, manganese, chromium,

diamond, copper, nickel etc., geophysical prospecting strategies.

Theory of inversion, linear and non-linear programming, optimization. Modeling and

inversion of gravity and magnetic anomalies of dykes, faults, interfaces and arbitrary shaped
bodies- Resistivity sounding, forward modeling, resistivity transforms and inversion,
interpretation of electromagnetic and I.P anomalies, synthetic seismograms.
