Classification of Nouns

A noun is a word or group of words that names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea.

NOUNS
PERSONS mother, teacher, students, children, mayor, actor, players
PLACES school, sea, park, forest, farm, playground, church
THINGS shoes, pencil, basketball, flowers, car, mango
IDEAS loyalty, love, commitment, happiness, strength, truth

There are several classifications of nouns. First one, we have common noun. A common
noun names any person, place, thing, or idea. Some examples of this are: singer, city, shoes, etc.

Second one is proper noun. A proper noun names a particular person, place, thing, or
idea. The first word and all other important words in a proper noun are capitalized: Regine
Velasquez, Batangas City, Adidas.

Common nouns can either be concrete or abstract. When we say concrete noun, it names
things we can see or touch. These are anything or any entity that has physical existence and can
be perceived by the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. The examples on the table
above, except for the row of ‘ideas’, are all examples of concrete nouns.

On the other hand, abstract nouns name ideas, qualities, and feelings that cannot be seen
or touched. The words which can be found on the row of ‘ideas’ on the above table, are examples
of these nouns.

Another classification of nouns which would be the last in my discussion is compound

nouns. Compound nouns are nouns made up of two or more words. They can be one word like,
bookmark, or more than one word, like ice cream. A compound noun can also be joined by one
or more hyphens, like in the words well-being, and mother-in-law.
