Should men and women be allowed to compete against each other in competitive sports?

Traditionally, in football boys could not paly girls. In 1972, this was made even more

official by the introduction of a law that barred boys from playing girls in the same sport.

Currently, the resounding question is whether men can play or else compete against women in

competitive sports. Someone would think that women should not compete against men because

men are naturally strong and tall in comparison to women who are generally weak. Still, others

may think that should women have the ability to compete men, they should not be denied the

chance. However, others think that men and women can only compete with each other at young

ages when their bodies are still developing. There are all reasons to believe that the segregation of

women in competitive sports is a motive driven by gender bias, more specifically, the

discrimination of the female gender. This essay presents an argument as to whether or not men

and women should compete with each other in competitive sports.

Different arguments are put forward to support the segregation of women from

competitive sports. On average, women are less physical compared to men which makes them

less fit to compete against the more fit and physical men. Women are fragile beings who only

can take part in light exercises but not the heavy ones. For instance, very few women would

make it to a weightlifting competition with men given their physical state.

The segregation of women is a safety measure in a highly contact sport like football. Men

are generally more aggressive when it comes to playing. While skills and energy are required to

make successful runs and beat the opponents, weaker players face it rough. Sport and size,

therefore, make a whole load of difference when it comes to determining whether it is fit for men
to compete against women in football. In order to protect women from the highly physical

contact with men who may injure them, it is safe to segregate them.

Although men are generally stronger than women, skills and not strengths make the best

athletes. Should women match the skills men have for a given sport, why should they be denied

the chance to compete each other in sports like Tennis and football? Apparently, this debate

exists only because we live in a society that views a man more superior to the woman. Moreover,

in many sports, physical attributes are not a basic requirement. For instance, women perform so

poorly in games like Darts, Bowling and Pool Billiard compared to men. Probably, there are

other factors that could make men more proficient in certain games compared to women but that

should not be used as a basis for segregation. Therefore, physical differences should not count at

all as a reason why men should not compete against women in sports.

The bottom line is that the segregation of women in competitive sports is a motive driven

by gender bias, more specifically, the discrimination of the female gender. I strongly believe that

men and women should be given equal chances to compete against each other in sports.

However, new rules should be made that cater for the different needs of each gender. This way,

the dominance of men in certain sports will be eliminated and it will also serve a great role

against gander discrimination.
